Pros

I have a job that gets me by

Cons

In my opinion, training is non-existent. You’re basically thrown into the job with minimal training and expected to know what you’re doing. I’ve asked for training because I want to know more but still nothing. The work life balance here is really hard. I end up working closing shifts a lot which eat up most of your day. You also end up doing a lot of closing and then opening the next morning which we call “clopening”. Between these shifts you don’t even have enough to get home, eat, and shower. You end up working almost every weekend and you don’t even get two days off in a row often. Extended hours on Christmas Eve. Do I need to say more? Low quality management. Laziness. Does not care about employees. Upper management turns a blind eye to what’s going on in stores so they don’t have to deal with it. Upper management does not allow enough time to complete projects and we don’t have enough payroll. Expectations are so much higher than reality. Not enough pay, time, or training for the quality of work they want.

Pros

20% discount & 5 hrs. OT for full time

Cons

Too much work expected from too few hrs. given to the store as a whole. And store managers who don't pull there weight!! Lower wages than most places but more work expected. Christmas season is the worst...no time off at all. Very hard to have a work family life!!

Pros

salaries used to be good and competitive but no longer are. 20% discount on employee purchases is nice but that's about all. quarterly bonus if you make sales forecasts and double bonus last quarter.

Cons

DM does nothing to support team. Managers often work 80+ hours because tasking is over the top and you are always short staffed. They will not let you give more than 19 hours to your part timers and expect them to be good, hardworking loyal employees for $7.50/hr 19 hours a week. Because of this you have constant turnover and are constantly hiring. Your only full timers are management and Furniture manager. As a manager you will haul freight, unload trucks, carry sofa's on your back, unload furniture and receive 20-30 tasks a day that have to be set. The new company management gave everyone hope but all the old DM's still have the same Walmart mentality so store managers work their tails off for very little compensation. (salaries have dropped some 30 to 50% in the past 5 years and they are finding ways to weed out legacy employees that have higher salaries) Very dirty business. Furthermore they sexist mentality is EPIC! Female store managers can earn up to 20% less than their male counterparts. The bonus system is a scam if you plan on leaving. You will work your tail off for a bonus but if you are not employed 2 months after bonus cut off, when they are actually paid, you dont get it. That means by the time you get your bonus you have already worked 3/4 of the way into a new quarterly bonus. Therefore if you leave the company, they rob you of the bonus that you broke your back for them to earn. The company treats people horrible and is the worst company I have ever worked for. Training is a computer module and hands on training is nearly non existent. You are forced to sign off on training you dont even receive. They push anti-union to a degree that is brushes against the law the way they intimidate you about not talking to union people and reporting anyone who does. DM's sleep with store managers and yearly out of town seminars are nothing more than a chance to chant the mantra during the day, get drunk and sleep with other DM's and managers at night. The Managers that work 40 hours have the worst stores but get away with it if they brown nose the DM and he doesnt say anything. If you are an Asst Mgr and are offered a management position, better to stay an Asst Mgr where you can get OT than to become a Manager and have to work 80 hours a week with no life and no overtime pay. My 2nd last week there I worked 92 hours and slept in my car only to be screamed at because a display had not been set. If you complain to your DM they do nothing but get hard on you. If you complain to HR they blacklist you and will go to any extent to get bogus negative feedback to justify getting rid of you. I have seen fabulous managers weeded out this way. They have no regard at all for their employees. Better to wait tables than work for Big Lots.
