BV Culture In Ruins under Azar’s ‘Leadership’

Pros

Diversity of offerings to our clients positions BV well for weathering recessions.

Cons

By far the most significant downside to working at BV is the lack of effective leadership from new CEO, Mario Azar. In less than a year, Azar has dismantled the incredibly positive and “shared ownership” mindset that previous CEO’s Len Rodman and Steve’s Edwards worked so hard to foster among the employee-owners. Gone are the days of feeling connected to our leaders and feeling inspired to share in their vision of moving the company forward, because frankly Azar has worked to move the company backwards, seemingly treating his role as one of the old Partners instead of as CEO of an employee-owned company, affecting a dictatorial leadership style. Clumsy re-organizations, a laughably inept attempt at a Return To Office policy, and deceptive, dismissive, and condescending communication with employee-owners, have all resulted in morale being at an all-time low and many talented employee-owners leaving the company.

We appreciate you leaving a review for us and we're happy to see our diversity of offerings as a pro--we agree! It does indeed help us weather recessions in the future.--as does acquiring new companies! Just a mere 7 days ago we announced a new addition to the Black & Veatch family of companies--Bird Electric Enterprises. Mario is working hard to carry the vision of moving us forward and we're thrilled for what it means for us! Thanks again for your feedback.

HR asked me to post this

Pros

I'm not typically one to voice my opinions, but this morning I woke up to a teams announcement from HR asking me to review BV. Apparently the negative reviews of our new CEO have really gotten under his skin enough that he asked the company to say nice things on glassdoor. Likely because he can't silence the feedback on third party sites like he does with our internal communications. The audacity to ask us to do this is compounded by the fact that the CEO just had an opportunity to own his mistakes in the town hall yesterday, but instead told us to "put it behind us". Additionally, despite a record breaking year, and effectively cutting our salary by mandated RTO, they still didn't provide raises that match inflation. So here are the pros: The people, projects, and diversity of experience a BV are unparalleled in the industry. This can be a wonderful company to grow your career if you are a motivated professional. As someone who has spent their career with one foot in construction and the other in design, there has been no better place for me. That being said, this company has clearly pivoted away from the people focused company I loved. Working here is clearly now only transactional, so be sure working here is worth your time. Ask others what they make and make sure you are being paid fairly if you decide to apply/stay.

Cons

I didn't have many cons before the recent CEO transition and subsequent decrees mandating return to office. Despite record breaking years with working remotely, and the promises that this new CEO stated on camera during his inaugural company address, we get hit with mandated RTO just before Christmas. It just feels so from the playbook of global politics...promise one thing, do another. The world is tired. So the cons are few, but unfortunately large: 1. This company doesn't care about you so look out for yourself. 2. Leadership is comfortable reversing policies that impact your life decisions without any warning or dialogue with their "employee owners". 3. Offices are now full of people who don't want to be there, and who still talk to their globally located coworkers via TEAMS calls. What a great culture.

Thank you for leaving your personal review with us. As a company we do not require professionals to leave reviews on Glassdoor; however, we often have professionals reach out directly to their personal connections and smaller group affiliations encouraging them to leave reviews about what it’s like to work at Black & Veatch. Our employees have thoughts, opinions, and stories to share, and all reviews help inform how we can continue to evolve for the better. We understand that the hybrid work environment has been an adjustment, but we strongly believe it will be impactful to our employee-owned business now and for future generations. We appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

Tyranny and Micromanagement

Pros

Individual team members not at a management level are great. If all you care about is money, great place to be. If you don’t care about flexibility or hybrid work, it might be okay - truly despite calling the current arrangement hybrid and flexible, I would only consider coming here if you want to be in an office, period - see cons.

Cons

The RTO enforcement keeps making things worse. For one it does not actually allow for flexibility, that’s just a buzz word. If you pick three days but have a reason you can’t make one, you need to make it up/go in another day that week - that’s not flexible. And all announcements made and the rumors spreading are creating a lot of fear; it’s not at all clear what will happen if you fall short because you actually needed flexibility. And this is the environment everyone is in - very heavy handed announcements, vague threats about “enforcement,” messages from the CEO that you just need to shut up about the difficulties, and a lot of swirling rumors. People are unhappy, leadership is encouraging employees to monitor and report on each other. Even for folks who are or would thrive being in an office, I don’t think I can recommend being here because this atmosphere is not healthy or supportive. Everyone is walking on eggshells. Lastly, employee ownership is all about money. You don’t receive respect or consideration (see RTO), it’s all about the fiscal returns. The tyranny currently in action is simply not worth it.

Thanks for taking time to share your feedback about our hybrid work. For more than a year, we have maintained our hybrid model to give professionals flexibility, and we think it was the right move for our company and our clients. We believe the hybrid model serves to preserve the fabric and culture of Black & Veatch and offers flexibility while building meaningful in-person relationships. The badging enhancement is needed to support our working environment, where professionals are in and out on different days and times, because we do care about your safety and health. Thanks again for your inputs as we navigate this new working landscape together.
