Pros

- Lot's of interesting problems to solve - Somewhat flexible work/life balance - Great dining options

Cons

- Unclear (read: non-existent) growth ladder for most teams - Internal philosophy is to hire instead of promote - Recently hired a large number of middle managers who are focused on building a castle instead of growing employees, working on high-leverage projects - Comp is not competitive, even for those who outperform - Project ownership is a thing of the past - Top level management talks about transparency and open doors but those who speak up are reprimanded by middle management - This company is not what it used to be

Pros

Square has been a great place to work for the past few years. It's provided me the opportunity to grow in my career and learn new skills, while simultaneously witnessing a rapidly growing company adjust on the fly to new challenges. Working at a company that grows and changes so rapidly has been one of the best ways to learn quickly. The amount of experiences that I feel like I've faced in the few years I've been here seems much higher than my peers at slower moving companies. I think this can only benefit me. There are a lot of great people here to work with and learn from. I have real friends here, not just co-workers. Leadership has become much stronger on account of some key hires.

Cons

Growing pains come with the territory when you move quickly in an industry that is constantly changing. We are going up against behemoths that have deeper pockets and more resources than us. In my opinion, that makes it a bit more fun, but it does make for some thrash as the priorities evolve and shift with the changes in the environment.

Pros

Compensation is competitive, and work-life balance can be reasonable — largely because execution is inconsistent and priorities shift so frequently that sustained pressure is difficult to maintain.

Cons

This is the most dysfunctional and ethically concerning organization I have worked for. The culture is deeply political and Machiavellian. Leadership lacks a clear, coherent vision, and the company operates in a near-constant state of reorganization. Decisions feel driven more by personal relationships and loyalty than by industry expertise or sound strategy. Many senior leaders appear unqualified for the roles they hold, and accountability is minimal. Racism and sexism are not isolated incidents — they are systemic. As a Black employee, I experienced and observed patterns of exclusion, differential treatment, and limited advancement that were impossible to ignore. Nepotism is normalized, and leadership representation is overwhelmingly White and Asian, with very little Black representation despite repeated public commitments to diversity. There is a stark disconnect between the company’s external brand and its internal reality. Products like Cash App disproportionately serve Black and Brown communities, yet the company struggles to hire, retain, and protect Black employees internally. This contradiction deserves serious scrutiny. Psychological safety is low. Speaking up carries real risk, and issues raised through formal channels rarely result in meaningful change.
