Not A Good Place To Work

Pros

Total compensation is ok. Amenities are decent.

Cons

Company lacks focus and direction. Multiple teams on wildly different technology stacks. Developer tools and support are not prioritized. Often don't have the infrastructure or tools needed to accomplish a task. Developer education and onboarding is left to teams. Re-orgs are frequent. Managers are not held to a consistent standard across teams.

Pros

Great people work at Block and there are super smart, talented and very helpful teammates in the Executive Operations department; Plenty side projects to work on when you have the bandwidth; Compensation is great; working for Block is awesome because the company mission is pretty legit; the Block office spaces are wonderful and visiting them is always a treat.

Cons

Very clear/obvious favoritism in the EO department; if you're a favorite of the leads then you'll have great opportunities for advancement and even to get away with things other EAs would never do/be able to do; too easy to fall out of someone's "good graces"; drama every time the group meets in person at an offsite / someone honestly gets fired after nearly every EO offsite because of it; diversity in leadership hardly exists; if you don't live in California - good luck trying to advance in the company and in levels; advancing in levels is nearly impossible now. After the team favorites were promoted the promo rules magically changed. Now you need a "business need" for your promotion so you're essentially stuck in your level unless you switch roles or your exec is promoted; I supported some of the worst execs in my EA career at Block, Inc. which is crazy because Block has great people but some of the senior leaders (across the company) aren't so great and are instead super problematic with poor internal reputations. Before the layoffs, politics in the EO department was insane. Some leads give a lot of lip service and will act like they support you and are "there" for you but actually aren't. Some leads literally don't respect confidentiality and run their mouths like teenagers in high school.

Pros

The company is always evolving and is building some cool things in the crypto space which means there is opportunity to get exposure to new things.

Cons

Leadership within the company and the talent team itself is nonexistent. There is no one to step up and make decisions, our team is full of mediocre managers that all seem to be trying to steer the ship in opposite directions but with no intention or strategy. As recruiters our jobs are completely thankless and we are at the mercy of the SIP Lead is who is known to be a complete tyrant and a nightmare to deal with. She treats us all of though we’re disposable and none of the work we do matters. Team members are dropping like flies because she is so insufferable. And you can’t just leave the SIP team and go to the other ones like Block or Cash either because they all have lame duck leaders who seem to have no clue how to lead any of us through this high growth stage. Turnover across the company is at a record high for good reason and Talent is no exception. In addition our executives recently lied to us and said they would start adding more cash compensation to make up for our flailing stock but that did not happen, all of our pay increases were not only minimal but all equity which is good for nothing when you can’t pay your bills. Avoid this company and the talent team at all costs. It is an absolute train wreck. Until all the old guards are out and new leadership with REAL experience steps in this will continue to be a vicious cycle.
