Pros

Smart and caring people for the most part who make you want to extend yourself to give your very best Great work life balance Decent benefits Great teamwork Exceptional inclusion and belonging by some leaders and teams There are a lot of bright, fun, caring and scrappy colleagues at Block who are dedicated to the success of the company. Block has an incredible amount of diverse employees which creates great opportunities for getting to know people while growing our careers together. That said, there's definitely room for cultural improvement with some parts of the organization. When you join Block, understand that it is a federation of companies (Square, Cash App, Tidal, etc) that largely operate independently. Indeed, most of these Glassdoor reviews are a compilation across those different companies that are under the Block Inc umbrella. It's important to note that there are very different approaches to performance evaluation, pay, culture, and even racial equity and inclusion depending on which part of the company you land in. While the company is working to integrate its entities, there's still a ways to go. For employees, that means that the experience and the culture can be vastly different from one part of Block to another. Some parts of the company are very racially inclusive with a sense of belonging and advancement opportunities for all team members. Others seriously miss the mark. Because groups and appointed leaders are allowed to largely operate very independently, there can be extreme differences including racial hostility and toxicity in parts of the company that go unchecked.

Cons

Advancement. Because there are no role-based performance guidelines or metrics in the company, advancement is left to favoritism, bias, and "mystery" criteria. Surprisingly hands off approach to DEI. Racial inclusion in particular is not always organic or even welcomed by all leaders and teams across Block. Poor leadership. As others have noted, there is a serious amount of gaslighting when serious issues arise. It's unfortunate because there is a lot of good about this company and great opportunities if you land in the right spot. Block is still a young company. While it's definitely not a startup anymore, it does have a ways to go with leadership development along with organizational and functional maturation.
