Poor Environment and Upper Management

Pros

Great cause and the CEO is great.

Cons

Upper management has no values and often threats employees with being fired. The people who "play the game" and are passive aggressive often stay and get promoted while the hard workers are bullied.

Pros

LLS is drastically different depending on the chapter and the campaign in which you work on. National office is trying to implement campaign standards to make a more cohesive experience. I have been at LLS for over 3 years in Man & Woman of the Year and I love my job. I have the freedom to make my campaign my own, I have the trust of my manager and the regional and national staff. I have learned SO MUCH about science and cancer research and about compassionate leadership. Fundraising is essentially a sales position though, no question. If you do well you get a lot of recognition and incentives. If not, it can be tough. Time off and benefits are great, but is really hard to feel good about using them until you start to feel comfortable in the job. Networking is a HUGE part of the job. Great for moving to a new city because your whole job is to get to know the players in the city!

Cons

The first 1.5 years. Generally speaking most campaigns are on yearly cycles, so it takes a whole year to see all aspects of a campaign. It isn't until the 2nd and 3rd year that you start to feel confident in making your job your own. There is little to know training- it is sink or swim in the first year, which really isn't fair and definitely leads to turn over. Staff is scarce and everyone has full plates, which means when you are first hired you are held to your quotas and revenue goals right away.

Toxic Culture

Business Outlook

Pros

The mission is the primary reason most of us join the organization. It continues to be meaningful even when the toxicity of leadership and the overall culture tend to overshadow it.

Cons

I joined this organization deeply connected to its mission and I was excited to make a meaningful impact. I had been cautioned by a former employee about the culture, but I chose to move forward believing that my passion and work ethic would outweigh those concerns. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. The expectations placed on employees- particularly around budget and recruitment- are consistently unrealistic. Success often feels narrowly defined, and if you don't exceed those expectations, the environment will quickly become unsupportive and high-pressure. Leadership plays a significant role in shaping the employee experience, and much of that depends on your direct manager. If your director does not actively advocate for you it can feel like you're navigating challenges alone. Despite long hours, strong results, and high-quality work, there is a persistent sense that it is never enough. You will always be expected to deliver MORE. While the mission is meaningful and the people on the ground are passionate, the broader culture can make it difficult to sustain motivation or feel valued over time. As inspired as you may be by researching Dr. Any Kolb, keep in mind you will be hearing more from Coker Powell and gaslit into believing cancer will not be cured if you do not ask for more, do more, work more.
