Consistently interesting, decently-paid work

Pros

Corporate stability makes a fair sense of security in one's job. Varied and ever-changing tasks keeps your mind engaged. Generally very competent, professional immediate coworkers and management. Pay is decent, retirement package is generous. Not-for-profit mission is well-internalized by most folks. Promotions easily achievable for those who are talented and motivated -- and for those who have the right connections.

Cons

IT infrastructure more at home in 1977 than 2011, desktop and mainframe, and most unhelpful IT staff. A higher than normal amount of political intrigue. Seriously, this is an insurance company, not the court of the Byzantine Empire. Health insurance plan, ironically, is sub-par.

Pros

Worthwhile mission as a not-for-profit health insurance company (this is slightly hyprocritical) Good pay Decent work environment Flexible work schedule (for some, not all)

Cons

Poor senior management decision making Bad decisions about technology changes affect everyone, yet no changes are made Middle management is over-worked and reflects poor senior management decisions Inconsistent work policies damage employee morale Antiquated technology and systems affect everyone Slow to change Senior management disconnected from workplace realities

little career advancement opportunities

Pros

There's usually a good work life balance. People tend to be very smart and there's ample opportunity for learning if you pursue it yourself.

Cons

Very slow moving and resistance to change -- some stubbornly maintain the status quo. Mediocrity is pervasive in some departments.
