It takes a specific kind of person to work in government

Pros

After you get past your conditional phase the stability is a benefit.

Cons

There are a LOT of rules for employees that do not exist for private industry. There are a LOT more stakeholders to consider for everything you do. There is no room to negotiate on salary - you come in at step one for the grade level assigned to your position.

The work is interesting and fulfilling

Cons

Upper management is more interested in upper management than the people they manage. The Supplemental Labor Office has been established and set free to manage the numerous (half the BPA workforce). Seemingly making up the rules as they go along, treating the contract workforce as ugly step children and bestowing benefit only to the BPA employees. Unfortunately the management style is to promote

Pros

All types of jobs are available and if you do not qualify because of knowledge they have education programs. BPA is located in four state and it is possible to move around.

Cons

Should hire more people of color.
