Pros

You just need to read all these reviews to see how turbulent the working environment is at BrewDog. Lots of people saying its the worst place they've ever worked, countered by positive reviews harping on about the amazing opportunities. Why would you even want to work somewhere, where there is zero harmony between its people? When I started working at BD, I was of course excited by the 'opportunities' too. After a 3 day induction, your feeling pretty pumped. 'Look how cool we are, we bring dogs to work, look at this cool facility, you can wear what you want, everything is awesome!" When I was in my 'head in the clouds' phase, I was approached by a member of HR and asked to write a review on glassdoor. They didn't ask everyone, just those of us who appeared to like our jobs. It took a little while for all of that positive marketing fog to settle before I saw all the cracks. I realised that those at the top were manipulating me. I had some major concerns over the way certain people were being treated and when I took them to HR I was completely shot down. HR doesn't exist in BD. The manager is there to protect the interests of 'The Captain'. You can change things at a surface level, that's okay. But when you've fixed all the and you start looking up a level, or to the departments at your left or your right. You realise that these problems are so deeply rooted in the company culture that nothing will ever change. And only those who are aligned with the aggressiveness and questionable morals of the company will succeed. If it's opportunities you are after, go work for any start up and you'll get a similar if not better experience. Its not like BD compensates you for their constant dramas anyway.

Ah, nice to hear from you again…! Look – we know that at various points different teams are under different pressures. One day it could be production, next it’s supply chain & customer service, and the next finance are feeling it. But the People team and our senior managers are constantly discussing where the current pressure points are, and whether they need assertive action or if it’s part of the cycle of the business; we make no attempts to hide the fact that this is an incredibly fast paced business and the pressure that comes with that is certainly greater than in most other jobs. The majority of our team embrace that and we certainly look to hire people who will thrive on it. If people are struggling with the pace, we will always discuss any needs they might have for additional support or guidance, but in some cases it’s just not the right fit for how they like to work. We know you’ve moved on from the business and hope you’ve found a better fit – and that one day you can look back at your time with BrewDog and feel like you learnt a lot from it.

The Worst Company I Have Ever Worked For

Pros

Some nice people trying to do a good job. Unfortunately they are completely overshadowed by the utter incompetence of the management and disgusting values of the business.

Cons

The leadership is absolutely awful. I've never seen such a poorly run company. The whole place is complete and utter chaos. Managers seem incapable of making even the most basic of decisions and have no idea how to manage people and engage their teams and make them feel valued. Basic processes are not in place because it's not "cool". Don't even think about career development because it's non existent. They would much rather hire someone external than develop the people that are there already. The People team are a total waste of space, they would much rather paint unicorns than help you if you've got an issue. I also found them to be the most unapproachable team in the whole company and tried to avoid any contact with them. The safety culture in the business is disgusting. There is PPE available yet some people choose not to use it putting themselves and others at risk, management do not seem to want to do anything about fixing this. Overall, the culture is the worst I have ever seen. People are overstretched, overworked and undervalued.

Hello! We’re disappointed that you were so unimpressed with the leadership your managers displayed. As you’ll know, we offer both internal (BrewDog Bites) and external (ILM) leadership and management training for all current and potential future managers in the business to help them develop their skills. We know we weren’t the best at it in the past, but over the past 2 years the investment into our managers has been enormous, so hopefully some of these issues are no longer the case! We take any concerns about HSE very seriously, hence why our HSE team have developed multiple internal programs to encourage people to self-police on PPE and call out issues if they see them, which have been hugely successful – in fact we just got incredible feedback on our safety programme through a number of external audits. As ever, we totally welcome constructive feedback on life at BrewDog and are happy to say that all the issues that you’ve raised are becoming things of the past…

Pros

Having previously worked for the company, leaving and then coming back, I can honestly say that taking things for granted can happen to anybody. It's a breath of fresh air to work with such an honest bunch of folk all passionate about numerous things, but sharing the main common ground, beer! This standard can be seen across every aspect of the brewery, everybody holds their work to the highest possible calibre, which then in turn lifts the bar for everybody to keep on pushing forward and further. Brewdog is a company that has come from small grass roots into a much larger player, yet still maintaining all those core values that make it what it is. No, I'm not just saying that because they pay me, it's true! Did i mention beer?

Cons

Brewdog expects fast and well executed results. A con of sorts, but only if you can't keep up with the tide. This is the only way to be though, if being the best you possibly can be, as a people and as a business is your goal.
