Pros

Very creative responses to reviews, unfortunately they are untrue. Build.com, and I'm specifically suspecting HR, are trying to save their good image on glassdoor when the pulse of the company is one of fear and distrust across departments and within them. The hiring process gets you pumped to work there, but after a while reality sets in and you soon realize that you got duped. You are just another cog in the wheel here, and thee is little to no synergy between departments. The fun of parties does not compare to having a well functioning workplace. I would much rather have the latter over the former, but that is not a focus here. It is one of the better paying jobs with benefits in the chico area, but they use that as leverage to keep people who want to stay in chico to work for less than they could make (including the cost of living excuse they use) elsewhere. Which yes, who ever took the position, thats on them. But Build.com could start pulling in better talent with better pay, especially for the positions they view as menial, but are actually the glue that keeps this house of cards from falling apart. $15/hr may sound good to you for certain positions, but adults trying to make a life for themselves cannot do so on such a terrible wage for working a technically skilled position.

Cons

The responses to reviews from Build.com I see here are not honest. The positive reviews here reek of HR writing positive spin reviews on glassdoor. Its been obvious in the past, now they have just gotten better and making their responses more unique instead of obvious copy and pasting of positive reviews. Seeing the responses, and lack of ownership in the real issues at the company, is just another red flag that they have no idea how to lead a company this size. One long standing exec left recently, and the reason they gave was not honest. There is little to no transparency company wide. That fact is fully recognized within the company, including management. But on glassdoor its all harmony and kumbaya. Yeah, Ok, right. While there may be a few people in the company that are actually trying to create real transparency, it is not a goal for executive or director level people, it is not worked into their plan. The bait and switch with comp plans happens almost quarterly for sales. They get you in the door by selling you on the "endless possibilities" to move up. No. That is false. As some one else mentioned in another review, you have to be in the cool club to get noticed, or be over qualified for the sales position you just took with the idea of a track towards something bigger, and nothing happens. Or blow them away by reminding them of the overly energetic CEO, who now lives in Puerto Rico. And our 2nd in command lives in Georgia, works remotely and is in the office every few weeks or so. As another reviewer correctly pointed out, most of the execs, managers and supervisors were (with a few recent exceptions) grandfathered in or appointed by people who do not want their direct subordinates to represent a threat. Everyone is afraid of being replaced at any moment. The fact that every single one of us is easily replaceable has been made abundantly clear. They would rather have turnover than train and support properly . Outside of sales, they promise you an element of control over your work flow, which may happen for a month or 3 while you get settled. But as soon as they get comfortable with you, they pile on the work until you scream. Thats the management style. And to the person that said they will put this kind of stuff on Compini (our internal anonymous feedback forum) because you think thats where it belongs....you do not understand the entire point of glassdoor. The people looking at build.com as a career deserve the truth, not just what the hiring team tells them. And no matter what position you sign up for, you will be forced to stop your work and take customer phone calls when the under-staffed sales center cant handle the load. And with minimum training on how to use those systems since your job could be completely unrelated to customer service or sales. Nice planning! Another red flag that the upper management does not care, or doesn't bother to think, about how the employees feel. No matter what, its dollars over their own people. If you would like to be valued regardless of your department, seek employment elsewhere.

Well, there is a lot here to digest. First off, no HR spin here, just me, founder of the company reviewing these. The reviews you see are when we bulk email the company and ask them to leave unbiased reviews. From your pro section ( which are unfortunately mainly cons ) it sounds like you've had a horrible experience here, and for that, I'm sorry. We're in a very competitive space, competing against Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, Wayfair, and a bevy of other companies. We try and offset the stress associated with the job with perks, parties, and ideally a flexible work environment. It sounds like you've had a bad management experience as well as have a huge disagreement with what the company stands for, our strategic direction, and leadership team. Since we're unlikely to change everything here to accommodate what you're looking for, I'd likely suggest you find a company that aligns more with your values, your ideas on strategy, and the style of leadership you enjoy. As a current employee, your best course of action would likely be to leave. I'm sorry that we didn't better articulate our values, our challenges, and culture in the interview process.

Pros

The company really stands behind its employees and treats us well.

Cons

Not much to list here. Upper Management is not always good and or clear on communication at times, but they are being very proactive in fixing that.

Pros

Great place to work with a great atmosphere. Everyone is really nice from the bottom feeders like me to the upper management. When you first start, training is great and outlines when you're going to do. Goals are established and well defined. Overall, it's a great place to work and highly recommend it... especially if you're in the Chico area. Easily one the best places to work in the surrounding areas.

Cons

I haven't worked sales, but I've heard it's not nearly as nice over there. That said, I have friends that are doing very well in sales and absolutely love it. Take that for what it's worth.

I'm really glad that you're enjoying your experience here. Appreciate all the kind words! I did however lose the hover board in a bet with my son, so you'll have to wait until I bring in the powered unicycle.

Pros

Used to be the best company to work for but there arent any Pros anymore

Cons

They took away all the great employee perks like the annual block party, Holiday party, and the cool contests, prizes, and swag. Pay cuts for no valid reason. Micro-managing EVERYTHING! Ascentis is the worst thing ever created. It feels like we are being punished to go to work. Even if you shattered your quota every month they still nit pick stupid little things and dont give you credit when credit is due. Since Chris Friedland left it's been an absolute downward spiral. It doesnt feel like upper management cares about its employees. It feels like no one takes responsibility for their actions, they just push the blame to someone else. If you go to someone telling them that their multi-billion dollars business's website needs to be fixed they say "Oh sorry thats not up to me that someone elses thing" and then when you go to that person they make some excuse as to why they havent fixed it yet when in reality its because they are lazy and the way the company is structured they dont care about making the website better and more user friendly they just care about hitting their quotas. The whole company is in a very bad way and company morale is at the lowest I have ever seen it. Everyone knows that management has screwed everything up and that all the employees hate working here, but none of them care. They only care about their paychecks.

Nepotism

Pros

* Laid back * Free stuff * Ability to curse whenever, wherever * Upper management has no problem talking with any employee * Lots of activities to break up the day * Free stuff

Cons

* Nepotism - I've seen people come in, do absolute terrible work, and be promoted within a year. As long as you can talk fast and BS the HR gatekeeper, you're in. * HR interviewing - same person for every interview and also decides who gets the job and who doesn't. HR should for sure have an HR person for every interview, but not the same one. Also, feedback comes from HR for a rejected interview rather than the people who were interviewing them sometimes. * Nepotism - Did I mention this already? A high level category manager also happened to be married to an executive. Weird. * Nepotism - Am I being redundant? * Happiness - This may seem like a strange one, but I find it discomforting when every single person you interact with on chat is super helpful and polite and has nothing bad to say about anything says nothing to you when you pass them in the hallways. It's bizarre. Hallway conversation isn't recorded, but chats are. Hmm... * Nepotism - I understand the company started small with friends, but just look at some of the hires who are doing nothing with their work. * Departure - Something must be wrong / broken when all the old guard have left leaving, basically, the CEO and a couple of his friends as the top dogs. * Culture - Gimme a break, there's close to (or over) 500 people working there. Culture is only found within departments and definitely doesn't translate that well across them.

There is a speech I give at Build.com where I address Joey Roth's picture depiction of being a martyr vs charlatan. Martyrs rarely get ahead. If you hang out, do your job, don't interact, and expect to be discovered and promoted, its much more difficult than someone who communicates actively and engages with others. Charlatan's are those "people who BS their way by" but don't do anything. In life, and at Build.com, in the short term can score promotions. In the long term, the truth comes out. Meaning that those people eventually get routed out for their bull. As far as nepotism goes, I'm going to say something you may find shocking. There is nearly no nepotism at build.com. Every time I've hired someone I knew or a friend, it has turned out to be a disaster. In fact, for friends, I blindly refer them to HR. Many don't get hired. What you may be perceiving as Nepotism is the tight bonds you see in our leadership teams. I, for example, am very close with all my exec team. Its not a function of promoting "friends" its a matter of becoming friends with those who you spend 60-80 hours a week with. Imagine having to spend that much time with someone insufferable? in fact, some of my team would argue that others on the team ARE insufferable. However, they tolerate it for the high performance. It sounds like you were or believe yourself to be a high performer and were looked over due to a lack of "esprit de corps" with the teams and management. My advice to you in your next job is to find a company or position where you really identify with the groups, culture, and leadership teams. If you don't find yourself personally compatible, leave before you end up bitter. Thank you for your comments and I hope you find meaningful employment elsewhere.

Pros

- People are great - Benefits are exceptional - Culture can be fun while remaining professional

Cons

- Management of some departments is obviously lacking and needs attention - Recent shakeups in upper management and the change in the values/mission statement of the company has left some employees feeling unmotivated

Pros

The culture, environment, and people are very nice and easy to work with. Having an idea is always a good thing and hardly gets shot down if worth pursuing. Personal growth is hugely valued and supervisors seem to care quite a bit about their employees. The company has many company-paid events that take place. Upper management (up the chain) can be really responsive at close to every level. Someone programming on the floor can easily communicate with someone on the VP level or higher if needed.

Cons

Stagnation, constant focus on new features rather than stability. Often times, the business side makes decisions that aren't always agreed with, where other issues are seen as more important.

Agreed with you on the pros. Cons- Yes, and what is difficult is that the bigger we get its harder to chose the right initiatives, and also the implications of changes now cascade.
