Don't believe the "culture" hype

Pros

Wonderful, smart, committed people. The company uses this to get employees to work 55+ hours a week: they know you feel a responsibility to your team and clients and don't want to leave them in a bind, so you end up working ridiculously long hours. Free food and drinks are nice, until you understand why they cater in lunch every Wednesday: so you will work through lunch, increasing their productivity. Excellent product.

Cons

I am not going to talk about the long hours since it has been discussed in many other reviews (although when I was looking for a new job, I talked to at least 6 recruiters in the Des Moines area and these are just some of the questions I was asked once they found out I was working at Businessolver: "is it true you're expected to work 70 hours?" "They really make you travel with a day's notice?" "What's going on over there? You're the third person from there I have talked to this week looking to leave." The "culture" talk is a farce - if a company has to throw culture into every conversation and cram it down your throat, they are trying too hard to make everyone believe it. The culture is one of favoritism, and God help you if you are not one of them, and is the opposite of transparent, even though they crow about that, too. They will screw with your bonuses and incentives. Bonuses and incentives are offered and then not paid, or they are paid two quarters later. Incentives for working during open enrollment helping with customer service (EVERYONE takes calls during this time, whether you are trained to answer the questions or not) are promised but never delivered. Executive team lacks respect for employees. They don't value your time and will put you off for months if you want to discuss making a change or talk about the fact that you are overworked or unhappy. Good luck having that meeting that's on your calendar with any executive, too. If you do, it will be 2 weeks later. Speaking of meetings, they LOVE meetings and will find any excuse to have one. Overkill. PTO is abysmal and they make you feel guilty if you leave before 5:30 PM, even if you have been there since 7:30 AM and worked through lunch. Do not work here if you crave/need flexibility. Stay away if you want any recognition for a job well-done, too. As was mentioned, many of the 5-star reviews are from the executive team or from people who were told to write them. One VP will gather people in her office and say it's time to write positive reviews! Don't believe 95% of them. They say their service center is not a call center, but it has become one (not being allowed to be away from your desk to even go to the bathroom - that sounds like a call center, doesn't it?) High turnover, even though they say it's very low. They also say it's easier to get into Harvard than Businessolver. HA HA HA! The only way to get an increase is to give your two-week notice; only then will they move to give you what you want (though it will be less than you asked for). They are extremely reactive when it comes to keeping employees happy and engaged (yet another meaningless word you will have shoved down your throat).

The shine wears off pretty quickly.

Pros

The free food and drinks are nice, but after awhile you'll feel guilty about taking advantage of it. You'll develop a nice bond with your co-workers because you sort of feel like you're going through the same struggles. The employees are all really well qualified, so the recruiting department does a really nice job.

Cons

They have a "run lean" mantra, which basically means everyone is overworked and they know it. They let the veteran employees/knowledge holders walk out the door because they are burnt out. This leaves giant knowledge gaps in key technical areas and the executives let it happen way too easily. You'd figure with that kind of stress you'd get a good amount of time off, right? It's actually the opposite. Not only will you have to work overtime much of the year, but you only get 10 days off per year (that's vacation and sick days combined). There have also been instances where they deny you time off until you get projects finished, or in the event that you do manage to get a day off, they might call you to come back in with an "emergency." It seems like they'd really prefer that you use up all of your "healthy days" between February and April. Lastly, the performance reviews and compensation increases are impossible to predict. I had two in 5 years. I did receive a nice raise once, but my starting pay was very low. By the time I received the raise it was still not commensurate with my job duties/responsibilities and then they hold the comp increase over your head for awhile making it nearly impossible to get another one without waiting for quite awhile. To sum it up, when it comes to having "delighted employees" they sure do talk the talk, but they absolutely do not walk the walk. Over promise, under deliver.

No work life balance

Pros

Pay was great but not worth the hours you have to work to not fall behind.

Cons

Company, new hire training portrays everyone as happy positive employees but it is completely opposite. Most people are burned out and miserable and there is a lot of negativity. Not a work - family balance company even though they claim to be. Not provided the time to gradually take on your responsibilities as you grow your knowledge and confidence rather thrown in without not much support to help you. Very stressful!
