No separation of HR and company politics

Pros

Resume builder. Long hours means a lot of experience.

Cons

Politics. C Space has a serious problem when it comes to corporate politics. The leadership team and upper management have been working together for years and have developed a toxic social click. If you have a problem, regardless of its nature (pay, workload, etc..) do not expect HR to help you. They are a part of the toxic cult and will not even look into your problem because they are a part of the cult. Sales sells business that the company is not equipped to support, and other employees are expected to figure out. This results in understaffed teams, long hours and a stressful work culture. People are not happy here. Avoid at all costs.

I'm really sorry and saddened to hear that this is how you feel about the 3-4 years you spent working with us. I'm Chief People Officer, accountable for the experience our HR team provides and also part of the leadership team. I can imagine that you may not appreciate the point of view I put forward so I won't write a lengthy reply, but think it's worth addressing a couple of specific points you raise. I can speak to my own experience of being part of a leadership team who cares deeply about the experience we provide to the C Spacers, doesn't always get it right, and just spent the last 2 days working together on an offsite where 75% of the focus was on how we can work together to effectively lead our business through change. Many of the team have worked together for many years, that's true. And this year, we've brought 7 new people into the team who weren't part of it 18 months ago, including me. I can also point to the engagement scores in the July staff survey where 92% of employees participated. 80% agree we have a strong culture. 84% relate to our values. 85% believe people in our business live our values and 80% of people are proud to work at C Space. That's not perfect, and unfortunately, it sounds like your experience was different. If you, anyone else considering a role at C Space, or anyone who's currently part of the team would like to chat more about any of this, I'm always happy to grab a coffee. Just drop me an email or connect with me on LinkedIn. Otherwise, I wish you all the best in your next career step. Phil Burgess, Chief People and Operations Officer.

Pros

Blue chip client roster Intelligent, amiable coworkers Convenient Boston office location Flexible work arrangements (remote, WFH, etc.)

Cons

Politics, not merit, dictate career advancement in client services. - Department managing directors had pet associate consultants (second lowest position) reporting into them. Intended reporting structure is two levels up (associate to senior, senior to director, director to VP/managing director). - Performance reviews were inconsistent, subjective (you self-select who will review your performance from your teams, and both the tool and performance matrix have no numerical score for benchmarking purposes), and cringe-worthy. I had a teammate with flawless performance be told they wasn't being considered for a promotion because they weren't more like X consultant in the department. Staffing/Workload - C Space is a hair on fire agency that is most likened to a boot camp. Approximately through the associate director level, expect to work 10ish hours a day and about three full weekend days. HR/dept directors will cry foul here but set up an informational interview with someone who has left C Space to get an accurate picture. Unless you have children, you will stay to finish the work. Terrible/non existent manager training. If you have a bad manager here, get out as soon as you can. Politics again rear its head here - a top performing senior consultant was put on a performance plan because she was observed to be consistently 3-5 minutes late to her meetings (never mind she was managing 3 accounts and 2 teams herself flawlessly). Beware the Kool Aid. It's quite strong. Senior leadership seems committed to its values without prioritizing market level compensation, L2/L3 management training and continued ed, and managing director/VP servant leadership. Abysmal associate/associate consultant training. If you're new to market research or fresh out of college, strongly recommend against coming here. There are plenty of other bigger, more established brands with better thought-out learning tracks AND better starting salaries. This was the experience of associates before me, my own cohort (who has all left), and three L1s who joined a year after me. I don't foresee this changing.

Thank you for the specificity of your post. It’s given us a lot to discuss. And I'm truly sorry you experienced so many cons. I hope you're happier in your new job. Once we’re past being defensive, and then perhaps overly optimistic about all the 2019 programs we’re launching that will address much of what you describe, we took time to sit in your shoes or at your desk chair and consider how far off this is from the employee experience we work hard to create. And how easy it is for one employee to make a serious impact (good or bad) on all of leadership. The only point I’d beg to differ on is for prospective employees to do an informational interview with someone who’s left – you can certainly do that, but more up to date information would come from existing employees. I'd encourage a prospect to have informational interviews with current employees who will experience our new performance management, onboarding and our brand new curriculum for training led by Leah Ben-Ami who came to us from Northeastern. Thanks for your advice. We’ll take all of it. Best of luck to you.

Pros

You will work with impressive clients and gain experience.

Cons

The culture is toxic. Most of the company staff is tenured high-level employees coasting through the work week or new associate/associate consultants lacking experience. They have a huge retention problem, especially when it comes to overworked mid-level employees. They say they have hired over 100 people this year, which means that 20-25% of the company hasn't even been working there for a year. You can expect a high stress, disorganized environment with long hours and low pay. Upper management is a lot of talk when it comes to improving these issues, however I never saw any improvements during my time at C Space. Instead they continued to sell business that could be properly staffed. HR's responses to the negative reviews are not what I experienced at C Space and I find the other low starred reviews to be accurate.

These kind of reviews are hard to read. Your experience is upsetting to hear and obviously not the kind of company we want to work at either. While this it isn’t the experience of all, we hear you and recognize that it’s yours and that’s not okay. We definitely don’t claim that C Space is right for everyone – our work environment like all consultancies can be stressful – and sometimes the work requires us to work long hours, though your experience seems to go way beyond that. Admittedly, growth can cause pain at least in the short-term and we’ve been working to improve resourcing all year long, with more work to do, and then making changes to ensure people feel more supported with the right tools and resources to do their jobs well. We also have new feedback tools, so we can stay closer to how we're doing and then how we can continue to make C Space a better place to work. All of this takes time and we have more important work to do there. Thank you for sharing your experience and we truly hope if you’re still at C Space that you work together with your manager, Ops Business Partner or HR to improve your experience and happiness at C Space.
