Pros

They let you think your apart of a family.

Cons

Every shift begins with CHANTS speaking to being family. Really they are saying "be one of us". If you have personal life threatening family issues & miss your numbers. They tell you to forget your issues & make this building your oasis! Got to hit your numbers no matter what... They chant "World Class Service" while Management treats you like dirt. It is embarrassing when your customers have a problem with delivery & MGMT pushes them aside because they have there money already.

Pros

I started working at City Furniture as a MIT ( management in training) about five years ago. I was promoted quickly into the position but have remained in the same position in the last three years. Although I do my best to get promoted, City Furniture only promotes those who are 20 % in sales. Unfortunately not all top performers can be managers but City Furniture always fails to see that. There isn't much growth in this company. In order for one to be a General Manager, someone has to die, quit, or get fired. And that doesn't happen often. I've reached the glass ceiling here and that will happen to anyone who is in the management program. While at City Furniture, though, I did make a lot of money. That is the best PRO of working here.

Cons

The growth in management is minimized unless you're friends with upper management. You will lose all your nights and weekends.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Your feedback is important to us. We want our promotion process to be as transparent as possible and remove perceived favoritism. As a result, we use an approach that evaluates our managers on sales performance AND soft skills. This ensure that our leaders not only have proven performance, but also have the competencies necessary to lead/coach a team. I'd like to explain how promotions are determined.... All of our current General Managers, Regional Managers and VPs get together in a room to discuss each candidate one-by-one to determine who will be promoted. In the time that you've worked for us (the last 5 years), eleven of our current General Managers were promoted into their position with this process. We feel that this process is fair and takes in to account a lot more than just sales performance as soft skills are discussed at length. As we continue to grow as an organization and open additional showrooms, there will be several General Manager positions that become available over the next few years. Stay focused on personal/professional development and your sales performance and I'm confident that you'll have the opportunity to get promoted!

Pros

Sales associates were friendly for the most part. Benefits were good, company paid for a part of your health care if you to a health test.

Cons

They are not upfront with you about your work schedule. It's not explained you have to work every weekend and every holiday except Thanksgiving & Christmas. Employees have basically no time to spend with there families on weekends. Not ideal job for single parent. There is favoritism and people who kiss up to management are promoted before people that have better numbers. The commission is on 4% which is the lowest out of its competitors. Finally, there are too many sales associates on the sales floor.

Thank you for your feedback. I have forwarded your review to our Sales Regional Managers and VPs. Additionally, our sales turnover team is currently redesigning our entire initial sales training and the new program will launch in February or March of 2016. The next item we will tackle is work/life balance. I'm happy to hear that our health insurance discount was favorable. Our team worked hard to significantly increase the discount in 2015/16. We are committed to making City Furniture a great place to work and appreciate your honest feedback in helping us identify our areas for improvement.
