Weak administration, loads of potential
Pros
Ethical focus on teaching and accessiblity for students (including financial accessibility). Generally good resources for a State University. Moderately competitive salary compared to many Universities nationwide, with exceptions by Department. Tenure tracks exist and are well supported.
Cons
Administration and staff. Some areas of campus are falling apart while others are gleaming. Most faculty are severely overworked due to lack of adequate staff support. Too few full-time faculty and too many transient part-time lecturers. Full disclosure: Administration and staff are generally typical, low-paid, low-skill workers who you would expect at a state-level institution (with notable exceptions, of course, but sadly too few). These are often non-visionary people who thrive on towing the status quo rather than truly advocating for either students or faculty. They are often inept at identifying problems or implementing solutions, resulting in dysfunction, and a culture of polite toxicity which limits program development and student success.
