Pros

Working for an institution of higher education with a diverse student body feels better than churning out widgets for Evil Corp. Information Technology is largely centralized and appears to be appropriately funded, with ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, communication, and service delivery. There are definitely some passionate people to work with.

Cons

There seem to be leadership issues at higher levels that trickle down through the organization, resulting in a politicized atmosphere with some stagnation and fear of making mistakes. That said, there seems to be support for implementing best practices and frameworks (like ITIL), which help to cut through some of these issues. Possibly related to pension and unionized employees, there are definitely some "old timers" and pension seekers doing the minimum to get through to the day they vest, which can be a drag on passionate employees. In central IT at least, positions are siloed with limited scope of responsibility and room for growth. It is easy for employees to say that something is "not their problem", when they could definitely contribute to a solution.

Pros

The University is mandated to adhere to employees rights as per collective bargaining agreement. It is great to work for this university for retirement and health insurance are available.

Cons

It seems that the hiring is behind doors focuses if you are a graduate of the university or of any Californian university. Other graduates get treated as lower class citizens. It is strange as the majority of student body are children of immigrants but faculty are California graduates. There is the culture of disrespect of part-time faculty at least in one of the sciences department. Do not believe what they tell you in the interview that you will be re-hired, they do not walk the talk and they try to save money by hiring own graduates. Tenured faculty make scientific mistakes and a part-time faculty is not allowed to correct mistakes. No academic freedom or even first amendment right to speak! Many faculty have been at this university as "part-time lecturers" for over ten years, that is unreal. Look for a progressive job elsewhere that allow you to progress in your career. Save yourself lots of humiliation and do not work for this university.
