Pros

I get to be a teammate to some of the hardest working men and women in the United States. Coming from a different industry, I had little understanding on how important rail is to the U.S. economy. I didn't know how many different skill sets were needed to keep the railroad moving. I ignorantly assumed or generalized that there were conductors, engineers and others that support the rail...but not knowing much more. We have operations in the building and in the field, techies, analysts, sales, marketing, a police department and so many more. I have been fortunate to stand side-by-side with a diverse and fun group of craft employees, managers, and senior leadership that have an unparalleled drive. My colleagues are some of the most proud and passionate people I have ever had the pleasure to worked with. The company itself is always examining new and innovative ways to redefine rail freight and the technologies that support what we do. It's an exciting time to be working here! By the way, the pay is pretty awesome too!

Cons

While most have good work-life balance, some teams (at certain times) have more work than the typical 9-to-5ers. That being said, you have to remember that the railroad is running 24-7-365.

Pros

I really don't know anymore

Cons

Work in all weather condions. Work on confined unsanitary locomotives and stay in dirty hotels but we get no sick days. We get Holiday pay only if on regular jobs but will take away one of your personal days for it. Can't ever schedule a personal leave day or daily vacation because the caps are set at least 8 times lower then the number of days workers have. One of the lowest paid on call, no structure, living in hotels jobs out there. Divorce rate is very high if you work for the railroad.

Pros

Coworkers for the most part are great. Salary and benefits are great. Most managers just do their job and get along.

Cons

Morale is terrible. T&E employees spend 80% of their time at work and on the other end of the run. The 20% spent at home they must sleep. Management does not see a problem with this. Upper management is so transfixed by numbers that they lose out on maximizing profits. The numbers received by upper management have no reflection on what goes on out here. Lower and middle managers are so afraid of losing their jobs that they fudge the numbers. It is akin to the recent Well Fargo fraud program ..... any problems are blamed on those who only do what they have been told to do.
