Pros

Many opportunities to get trips and make money if you are okay with working conditions. Room to grow professionally if you are willing to relocate.

Cons

While many other jobs within CSX will have structured hours and time off. Freight conductor is not one of them. DO NOT expect to know when you will have time off. When it comes, expect using time to get much needed rest. Time between trips is spent resting catching up from last trip and getting ready for next. After mandatory 10 hour rest, wait for next call. Call could come immediately or a day later. Makes it very hard to plan day/sleep patterns to arrive for next trip bright eyed and bushy tailed. Safety stressed but many find it confusing when standards are broken by management to get job done but then enforced when convenient. Very poor Union vs Management environment.

Pros

The pay is pretty good. Other than that read the Cons.

Cons

Always on call, Only 4 days off a month. If you want an extra day off plan on getting a couple extra because they will fire you for about a week. Training pay is not that good. The UTU union will not help you if you need something even though you pay a $100 month union due. Management literally hides in the bushes and waits for you to slip up and doesn't think twice about firing you. Want to take a lunch? Forget that.

Pros

The money, benefits, retirement are good.

Cons

Upper mgmt. and yardmasters, and trainmasters do not want to put a target on their back so they pawn the blame or blame things on others or redirect the blame somewhere else. Trainmasters get into trouble for the things that upper management knows that those trainmasters have absolutely no control over. Conductors get into trouble by one trainmaster, while another trainmaster said it was ok to do that in the first place. The only reason we get paid the money we get and the benefits and the retirement is the company know that if we got paid any less we would quite after a few months. In other words it would be a revolving door.... no life at all, if your single this is the job for you. You are away from home more than you are at home,,,, very political company,
