Pros

Great benefits in both health and life insurance. The company is one of the largest employers in the area and for the most part are well respected within the local communities. The gaming industry is an ever-changing and yet exciting profession.

Cons

Current downsizing based on the economy. With various new government regulations in place, there has been a reduction in business and thus a reduction in staff. Makes you sometimes wonder what each new day will bring

Pros

I belong to a union that protects me against biased management members.

Cons

If you are looking for a company to further your career in hotel management, Harrah's isn't it. I have worked with two Las Vegas based casinos (at the front desk) and talk about lack of upward mobility. Harrah's no longer interviews anyone for an entry level management position. They litterly pick out some at random (even someone who has never worked in the department) over all other senior employees within that department. Again, NO INTERVIEWING. Just someone being at the right place, at the right time, and being chosen by the Director of Hotel Ops. Harrah's also has a very poor relationship with unions, especially Teamsters. Harrah's even got cheap enough to cut bonuses given to employees and an annual Christmas gift of a $25 gift card to Smith's, because they over hired non-qualified managers that ate up their budget.

Pros

The casino gaming environment is fun and exciting, especially if you are an operator. There is always something interesting happening, between the restaurants, marketing campaigns, gift giveaways, and countless entertainment acts. It is a fast paced environment, with new promotions happening on a daily basis.

Cons

The business never closes, it is open 24/7. This leads to a difficult work/life balance. You work when everyone else is playing (weekends, evenings, holidays). Don't even think about doing something for New Year's Eve, that day is the single largest revenue day of the year, and as such it is all hands on deck! From an operations standpoint, if the project doesn't impact gaming, it will always be a second class citizen. The first things cut from the budget are the non-gaming related expenses.
