A really great place to work

Pros

The company focuses on doing good work for our clients. It does not have the typical start-up culture that a lot of other places have. Also, everyone I work with is smart, engaged, and willing to help out when needed. The company also listens to its employees - many of the changes that have occurred are employee driven. Caktus really encourages its employees to grow and provides that through their professional development plan and also, day to day, letting people take on tasks they haven't done before. We also have kittens in the office! There is a great deal of flexibility when it comes to your work and they emphasize having a healthy work/life balance.

Cons

At times decision making is slow due to consensus building. This comes out of a desire to ensure that all options are considered and that it will not negatively impact the employees.

Pros

Transparency: If you end up applying here, you'll know the salary for the position immediately. The company also strives for fiscal transparency overall and shares information with employees at monthly announcements lunches. Professional Development: I know that other developers in the Triangle do not get this benefit, but we get 4 days of PD and a very nice monetary budget to spend on it. We are also encouraged to speak and share our knowledge at conferences from the local to the international level. We are also encouraged to share their knowledge via the Caktus blog. Smart Employees: I choose to work at Caktus because it means I have access to a really smart group of people. Employees here are kind and friendly as well. Small Teams: We grew in numbers and also decided to start using Scrum. In order to best do this, we broke into smaller groups with each group maintaining different projects. The small team sizes mean that we have better communication during Scrum meetings. Hiring Process: The hiring process was great for me. I was able to move through it relatively quickly, although I know that is not always the case. I appreciated that there wasn't a take-home coding challenge because it's hard to make time for those when you work full time already and are looking for a new gig. Lunches: There are usually 2 or 3 delicious catered company-wide lunches per month that you can opt into. The lunches are catered by local restaurants and all special diets are taken into consideration carefully. They also stock wonderful, healthful snacks such as fruits, nuts and chips. Balance: Work schedules are fairly flexible for family and home needs. Employees can work remotely on Fridays when their schedules permit. My work schedule very rarely goes over 40 hours per week.

Cons

Some communication improvements could happen. The HR department is small.
