Pros

Professional environment with no micro-managing. The expectation is that you, the employee, are a professional and will get your work done. Many happy long time employees. Good benefits and pay as well.

Cons

The only cons are that regardless of position at CalPortland the work can be during weird hours due to the nature of the industry.

Pros

Pay is $32.00 an hours once you reach 900 hours. Before that pay is $15.00 per hour. a few nice older long-time employees. Some of management are reasonable people to work for. It's easy work for the pay. If you can drive a truck to the site without spilling and push a few buttons, that's about all you need a brain for.

Cons

Coworkers can be back-stabbers with no substantiated grounds. A good ole boys culture. There is no formal training program. Rather they have other drivers train you on the job. A lot of it comes down to if they like you or not, not so much your stellar performance. It is DEFINITELY a union mentality and if you don't follow the herd/crowd you will be ostracised and blackballed. some employees think they are gods gift to the ready mix world. You have to maintain 40 hours to get at least medical insurance and 80 hours per month to get dental and vision coverage. Due to the nature of the construction business, you may not get but 20 hours a week if you're lucky.

You need to be with the "in" crowd

Pros

You can learn as much as the management allows you to learn. Flexible work-time schedule. Company will pay you to stay and does not believe firing people even with probable cause. Lots of people with job securities.

Cons

Business units are like silos. Right hand does not talk or work with the left hand (too much in-flightings). Company does not train employees properly. You are at the mercy of the people you work closely. Management requires absolute loyalty from employees, not with the company, but with the direct reports. To advance, you needed to be hired by "the inner circle" of the particular set of the people who are running the regions or the HQ. Too many people with job securities.
