Pros

Why work for Cannon Design: - Competitive salary and benefits - Great physical work environment & location - If you're an architect....you'll typically be well respected.

Cons

Why you should be wary: - You need to always be at the top of your game...otherwise your expendable. - If you're not an architect...you're expendable. - You need to watch your back...from both colleagues and senior management. - They're not that great at recognition of individual contributions...unless you're one of the golden childs.

Pros

An exciting multi-national industry. Cannon offered a fairly competitive salary and benefits. Associates at lower levels are generally friendly, talented and cooperative.

Cons

Unfortunately, associates who are not in architecture or engineering positions are regarded as easily replaceable parts. Only a chosen few 'others' are acknowledged within the company's stifling 'members only' atmosphere. There is a definite caste system: architects, followed by engineers, then the remaining associates far below (the company web site provides a clear picture of the very limited professions that are promoted to the 'Principal' levels). As a rule, results are rewarded only if you are an architect or engineer - results are simply expected if you are not. It's a shame because the company does good work, but year after year excellent talent becomes frustrated and chooses to leave.

Cannon Design: A great place to work

Pros

Not only does Cannon Design had a very competitive benefits package, and comparable timeoff policies (let's face it... the industry standard isn't great...), it has some really quite fantastic people and interesting jobs. It's very stable due to large amounts of international work and overseas clients. And you really can advance in your career here; a mandatory annual review gives every employee good positive feedback and ideas for improvement that they need. Employees are encouraged to continue their professional education and really advance themselves. We were rated one of the Top A/E Firms to work for in 2007 and I don't think they were just making it up- it really is a good place to work!

Cons

It's definitely a fast-paced and can be a stressful work environment. The company is growing at a quick pace, and that means that it's tough for operations and administration to keep up. Hours can be long when deadlines grow tight... but that's pretty much industry standard. Really your experience working at Cannon Design is entirely based on what project team you're a part of, and what project manager you're working under. Many of them are excellent, attentive, and good managers and schedulers. Others are less so- disorganized or poor planners. And while you definitely have control of where your career goes in the greater scheme of things, you may end up under the management of someone you don't care to work with.
