PTO is not PTO.

Pros

Great opportunities to get involved with different types of projects and clients Great place to learn some skills for the next stage in your career.

Cons

Seems like most of the talent I've worked with is below their stated skill level. The "PTO" is more of a reason for them not to pay out bonus. They recently made a change to the bonus structure that causes you to lose out on the tiered bonus level if you take any time off. Oh and if you get sick, that's counted as your PTO so that will affect your bonus as well. It incentivizes people to not take vacation which is going to increase the attrition rate. Since they've switched to a bi-annual bonus structure, expect to see an exodus of talent come September after bonuses are paid. The tech market is too competitive to penalize an employee for taking time off. Not a place you'll want to spend long term.

Thank you for taking time to share your thoughts with us. As you mentioned, we are a company that takes pride in our culture of work life balance, so we want all employees to feel that they can enjoy our benefits while delivering great client work. The implementation of the bi-annual bonus was a result of our people sharing they preferred that structure, and that they placed more value on the base pay vs bonus payout. As a result, we have focused more on base compensation, and also love the increased opportunity to reward and recognize our people. If you’d like to talk about this further, I’d encourage you to contact me directly so I can learn more about your experience. -Katy Apostolides, Managing Director - HR

We appreciate you sharing your thoughts with us, and although some of it is tough to hear, we are always open to feedback. While Staff Aug is a part of consulting projects, we do work to make sure our people spend the bulk of time on valuable client projects that allow them to touch new tech and grow their own skills. If this was not your experience, I’d like to learn more about your project assignments. I’d also welcome the opportunity to understand more about your perspective on promotions and client feedback. We want our strong performers to be rewarded based on the merits of their work and to be able to establish themselves as leaders with a long career at CapTech. Our goal is always to support our people and their growth here. Please feel free to reach out to me directly. -Katy Apostolides, Managing Director - HR

Pros

- Overall very nice people and some of the smartest I've worked with - Good opportunities to learn/grow should you seek them out - Coach structure feels nice as there is always someone to reach out to for mentorship or job related questions - Unbeatable work/life balance. I've heard stories about clients where coworkers worked <20 hours a week and still finished all of their work for the week. This is pretty client dependent but I'd say that working more than 40 hours a week is a pretty rare occurrence. I'd highly recommend working at CapTech for people who have families or other big life commitments they'd like to prioritize. - Remote friendly; you're never required to come into the office and many employees have taken advantage of this by moving to other states/cities - Pretty good PTO, people won't bother you much when you're away

Cons

- Not the most exciting work. A lot of projects feel like staff aug (which they will claim is not true) which means grunt work on older codebases/tech. The work doesn't feel that challenging which could be a pro depending on what you're looking for, but overall the growth opportunities are highly client dependent - Staffing is a black box. One of the problems with so much being client dependent is that it's not very apparent how staffing works to many, nor does it feel like you get much say once you are assigned to a project. I was once put on a project that I felt was not the right direction for my career and had a senior manager tell me that it was a "really bad look" for me if I tried to switch to a project that I felt better aligned with my career goals. - Internal opportunities no longer feel like they matter. CapTech changed their bonus structure last year to be completely utilization based, with no emphasis on merit from client engagements or internal contributions. There was a noticeable decrease in employees from senior consultant and up who were willing to organize happy hours, get togethers, or contribute internally, since it wasn't going to affect their bonus anymore. It also incentivized people to submit longer hours and take less PTO. All of this negatively impacted the company culture that was a big plus for many (myself included). - "higher base pay" myth. The pay at CapTech is average for the industry in this area. - Only 8 national holidays; expect to have a lot less 3 day weekends than your friends

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. We’re so glad you love working at CapTech, and we want all our people to feel great about not only the culture here but the work they’re doing every day. CapTech has always been a place that values our people first which is why we examined our compensation structure, our benefits, our staffing process, and our internal opportunities, and rolled out the new plan in 2022. Offering a better bonus structure, benefits like Carrot Fertility, Fringe, and Modern Health, and formalizing an Employer Value Proposition was all done with our people in mind. I encourage you to continue working with your Coach to align yourself with projects that serve our clients, the business, and your goals. I’m always here if you’d like to connect directly as well. -Katy Apostolides, Managing Director - HR

Pros

The data and technology solutions practices have some talented folks and some decent leaders. They do a good job in hiring college hires who, unfortunately, leave after they realize their ex-classmates are making significantly more money and working on more engaging projects with other firms. They have some interesting work but it’s becoming significantly more staff augmentation because they can’t sell project work.

Cons

Captech is an amateurish, mid-sized consulting firm that doesn’t have any peers because they can’t compete with any firms outside of Richmond. They’re a small fish in an ocean. They bill themselves as an alternative to the big firms because their leadership is filled with uninspiring, tone-deaf, ex-big 4 consultants who couldn’t hack it in the other firms. Their pay is at the bottom compared with other firms. They go hard trying to sell their bonus structure during the interview process, but you soon realize the compensation package is subpar. On top of the low compensation, the unstructured promotion process has no verifiable guidelines and appears to be based more on cronyism than merit. Additionally, you’ll never get a real answer from leadership on internal work and how it contributes to compensation and promotions. The culture has steadily gone downhill in the past few years. Those who have the courage to bring it up are labeled by HR so it’s better to keep quiet rather than be alienated. They talk about belonging like it’s been a cornerstone of their existence but, in reality, they had little to no diversity and inclusion efforts before 2020. Since then, they pay lip-service to it and run with a D&I playbook that looks like HR did an internet search on “how to be diverse.” If you read through other reviews, you’ll see that most of what I mentioned are consistent themes that are never addressed by HR leadership. They’d rather convince themselves that it’s just “disgruntled” employees than pull their heads out of the sand and try to fix the issues. Great companies and leaders recognize faults and address them, CapTech fails miserably.

We’re an award-winning consulting firm because we have talented people doing incredible work in all areas of our business. Being the tech firm of choice for NASCAR, TMRW Sports, and Fortune 500 clients in multiple industries, along with developing proprietary software like VISTAR and PinPoint Challenge, makes us not only competitive but a leader in technology consulting nationwide. Our culture is strong because we have exceptional people who make up our company and we’re proud of the work, environment, and total rewards packages we offer. -Katy Apostolides, Managing Director - HR

Pros

-Worked with some of the smartest and most helpful people I have ever met. -Most leaders are very down to earth and available -Work life balance is better than most other consulting firms. You can always say no to internal work and generally, if you are billing 40 hours a week for a client, that's enough -Get to work with a wide variety of teams, clients, and technologies -Flexible working locations and generally low travel requirements Easy to say no to travel. -Many social events and fun outings which Captech pays for. Most coworkers are fun too!

Cons

-New Bonus structure incentivizes employees to game PTO and how they bill client hours -Company is improving, but diversity is still a large issue. -Company is prioritizing hiring and growth of college hires, sometimes at the expense of more experienced and tenured hires -Consultants have lack of control over staffing, and with a new bonus structure, consultants can lose several thousand dollars of bonus for things outside their control such as a client delaying a few weeks to start a project. -Lack of control over projects can also lead to projects that are not the right fit skillset wise and impact a consultant's career path -Internal networking is sometimes necessary to get best opportunities
