Pros

Largely friendly folks; I met some great and enthusiastic people while working here. They are still great, but no longer enthusiastic- more on that in the next section.

Cons

I truly, sincerely wish I had more good things to say about CIG. They gave me a start in a competitive and thriving IT field, and without the cash-out at the end of their employee stock ownership program (from which I truthfully never expected to see a penny, and almost never did but for the generous buyout by Auto Owners) I would not be a homeowner now. The salary, 55k in 2016, was a lot for a kid just out of college who had no plan for his future other than to stumble into an opportunity like CIG. It truly was a lucky thing that they hired me. If you'd asked me in my first few years there, I would have happily given 4 stars: not perfect, not a dream job, but everything it needed to be. I stuck around for 5 years. This I believe was nearly twice the median tenure of similar hires at and throughout my employment there. People leaving is the only metric one truly needs. They leave because there are better opportunities, their leaving creates voids that management cannot fill for the same reasons they could not keep them filled, and they double down on a work culture of passive-aggressive micromanagement, forced enthusiasm, and normalizing unpaid overtime without remotely conpetitive salaries. My sticking around as long as I did won me modest to moderate yields in terms of compensation, influence, and empty promises of greatness to come. By the time I left I was making a little over 70k, a figure buoyed by a few project managers to whom I remain eternally grateful and stunted by one whose admission of mismanagement was NOT followed by a recalibration of salary nor a jumpstarting of a career path stalled by semi-annual restructuring. Ultimately not bad as a percentage increase for the time served, but still significantly below industry averages then and now. Had you caught me on a good day in those final months, I might have been convinced to give the place 3 stars for being aggressively average and holding onto a few exceptional people despite their best efforts. So why 2 stars, and why now? I keep in touch with many of those excellent people, and I hear how much further the company and its work culture slide in the wake of covid. Remote work could have continued to be a boon for the company and its employees, a way to reduce overhead (and who knows, maybe a saving passed along to workers!) and give a real culture a chance to develop organically. Instead, tone-deaf veterans in the C-suite demand a return to in-person workers confined to beige and grey rows, justified by shameless fabrications about the virtues of commuting and collaborating- lies, all of them!- and arbitrary restrictions on remote work, no doubt with the intent of phasing it out altogether save as a way to destroy the home as a refuge from work (you have your laptop in your living room, be a team player and hop on to help!). This compels me to write now and tell the HR folks at good ol' CIG who do in fact read these reviews: I'm doing you a favor, if there is left in that organization the good sense and humility to course correct. I wish I could say that I think they'll take it to heart and move into a future outside those burlap walls that long for yester-year, but I'm no longer optimistic about CIG

Pros

Love the people here, the software teams truly are family. You will be supported and taught what you need to know, hours are flexible, and IT is fully remote (the only division in the company to enjoy this privilege). The company is thriving financially and does profit-sharing, it has and probably will be around forever.

Cons

Unfortunately, the teams are not responsible for salary, and it shows. We've been hemorrhaging our most talented people for years because of this. Promotions without raises are commonplace. You will be underpaid as long as you stay at the company, period. Management is well aware of this issue, but IT has a backbone of truly exceptional developers (contractors on work visas) who cannot leave and a revolving door of fresh graduates who stay just long enough to get legitimate offers from a company that will pay them what they're worth. Unfortunately this ecosystem has been working for close to a decade.
