Pros

starting salary is good and the food is good

Cons

All experiences are my own: The ranking review system is life-breaking. If you are lucky, you join a team with an understanding manager, but if you are unlucky, your manager will have no mercy on you, literally saying, “Well, maybe you can learn those things while you are resting or napping." The job distribution is not fair across the same job title. Be aware, some managers will bend the company policy to make you work more, and you will not have a place to complain about it because the managers are not being managed based on their humanity. This company is very result-driven, with no work-life balance. The onboarding process to learn the codebase is close to none, and the management team is abusive, but it does not seem anyone cares to report. The little guys suffer because they have to make the money.

Pros

Updated building, free parking, 1x day remote a week

Cons

My experience working at capital one was very negative. It’s a very cut throat environment, you’re on your own from day two working here. I learned that you have to be fake at this company, the ones that got accustomed to it and it’s second nature it can work out, otherwise good luck. On the team I was on, all it did was gossip and make fun of the clients it supports on what baffoons they are. I felt bad for the employees that reached out to me regarding them not agreeing with their performance ratings and how unfair they are, and that they are rated not based on performance. All I could do based on guidance is tell them it’s up to the business and client group to determine if they can change their rating-even if it was evident that manager tried to justify the low rating by pulling a cat out of a hat. All in all, the team I was on was a trashy team and I’m actually embarrassed to have worked there. I now have people reach out to me asking what’s it’s like working for Capital One and I refer them to read Glassdoor reviews. It’s pretty sad how many people are worried where they will end up during Performance Management cycle every 6 months. In terms of their stack ranking, during performance cycle 10-12% are required from each team to be below strong (meaning your on the chopping block and will be put on Coaching Plan or a PIP after you receive your low rating). I’ve seen some really good employees placed on below strong and managed out. If you’re a hard worker and don’t brown nose and question lack of professional environment or very confusing policies that don’t make sense-policies are there not for the benefit of employees… then this company will be very difficult for you to navigate and you’ll eventually leave or be managed out through performance. Good luck. Oh, capital one hates when people quit. They feel people should only be let go….. a cult like culture.

Pros

- Competitive salary - Great 401k match - Good benefits - Conveniently located near Metro station - Remote flexibility (for now) - Some good people

Cons

- Stack ranking creates an unhealthy work culture where you're forced to throw others under the bus or be let go - Performance reviews are opaque - Way too many useless meetings - Work is pretty average, to relatively uninteresting depending on your team - Overall very toxic culture that leads to overwork and infighting - If you're driving, traffic is hell. Take the train.
