Pros

Its a company that does try its best to be honest and decent. If you complain about having to work too hard at this job, then you are doing something wrong. Although it does take up a good bit of your time, hours are flexible. You sit around all day doing what you choose to do, very few people consistently telling you where to be and what to be doing.

Cons

Pay isn't great. Pay is also based on performance and most people selling used cars dont have degrees so its not that bad by comparison. Hours are long. Sometimes it can wear on you when you realize that you are in fact a used car salesman, and that your co-workers are the typical car salesmen.

Pros

First I want to clarify that I am working at headquarter in Richmond. My review doesn't reflect the working conditions of our 100 stores across the nation. Since we made the list of Fortune's best 100 companies to work for four years in a row, I am confident that our associates at the local stores are satisfied. CarMax has a very strong and competent senior leadership team. They are very sensitive to associates' needs. In my opinion, they don't overpay themselves either. CarMax offers great work/life balance. I work between 45 to 55 hours a week as an analyst. At the headquarter, it has a gym and an indoor basketball court. You are also able to find a nice car at a low price. The management is very supportive of your personal development. At least in my group, we know each other very well, feel like a big family. Traffic is non-exist in Richmond.

Cons

The pay is average/below average compare to other consulting firms. But if you take into account of the living cost. It's at least comparable what you get paid at big consulting firms in big cities. Working in a used car company doesn't generate lots of prestige. Richmond doesn't have a professional sports team. The only minor league baseball team just left the town. Crime rate is a little high. I am sure having CarMax on your resume helps or hurts your career. But the acceptance to the top business schools has been high. Analysts got into Harvard, Wharton and alike.

Pros

I'm a Buyer and we wear many hats. We are responsible for buying all the vehicles that we sell, either from auctions, and customer appraisals. We also price all the vehicles, coordinate our wholesale auctions, and manage sales consultants. One of the best things about the job is that we do so much, the days just fly by. The pay is OK and the benefits are decent. The culture is very young and fun. I like it a lot, and plan on being with Carmax for a very long time.

Cons

The only thing I can think of is that our consultants are still being paid $150 per unit. I don't think this amount has changed since the company started.. As a Buyer, I am paid a decent salary, but I often wish we could pay an additional $50 per unit just to offset the inflation a bit for our consultants. They are the lifeblood of our company and I think they should be paid more. I hope this changes in the near future.
