Pros

Most of the department regular employees are good people and want to do the right thing.

Cons

They promote pencil pushers and managers, not leaders. They play favorites and are quick to find someone to bring down just to justify their own job. It is not about people to them; it is only about numbers and keeping those above them off their backs by being on yours. Also, CarMax has only implemented one pay increase to commissions since opening in 1993... One... Managers and higher get adjustments for cost of living and time in position EVERY YEAR. Not for sales consultants..

Pros

Growth opportunities, travel opportunities, good benefits, store meetings include games and a cookout, company also does alot of charity work and fundraisers.

Cons

Poor work/life balance, manager are unprofessional and play favorites. The store I worked at has managers that discriminate against women, managers that gossip with associates about other associates, managers that sleep with customers, and managers that sleep with other managers.

Pros

One of Fortunes Top 100 Best Places to Work; One of Fortunes Top 125 Training Companies. The training is very thorough for external candidates; Time a way policy vs sick pay or vacation. If you are performing well, or family emergency, etc, anything that may require "time a way" you are paid your full salary. This benefit begins immediately. Bottom up philosophy vs Top down. The company listens to the associates and store management. Lots of room for advancement and growth. This is a huge focus. Team work and associate development are key!

Cons

Training program for all positions, but especially sales is very long. Don't get behind in your staffing, and always keep a management bench. If you loose a Sales Manager, for example, training an external candidate will take 6-9 months. Developmental activities are micromanaged. Every associate must have X number of written observations, Development plan, monthly development sessions called "File Reviews", etc It is exhausting so you better be passionate about development, and feel comfortable being audited.
