Pay could be better, for the hours worked especially during tax season and the fact that nobody in the firm gets any bonuses, where other companies get bonuses on top of their existing salaries. Hours for the tax department are horrible but that is to be expected.

The audit staff starts working longer hours before the tax department but is not allowed to cut back on billable hours until after April 15th when the tax department drops their hours. However, this is offset some during the summer months.
