Pretty good balance

Pros

The work space is very laid back, the partners are understanding and cut you slack when need be. Everybody is very friendly in the office.

Cons

Pay could be better, for the hours worked especially during tax season and the fact that nobody in the firm gets any bonuses, where other companies get bonuses on top of their existing salaries. Hours for the tax department are horrible but that is to be expected.

Pros

Steady work, good starting salary, good benefits. Most fellow staff accountants are nice to work with.

Cons

Forced to ghost hours. Must work 80 plus per week during tax season to get 55 billable. Must work 50 to 60 hours outside of tax season to get 40 billable hours. The Raleigh office is a "meat grinder" firm. Local managing partner is negative towards employees. Staff member (non-accountant) who assigns tax returns in not competent and abusive.

Staff Accountant

Pros

This particular office had a great group of people to work with. The company overall provides great training for all staff and well structured.

Cons

Public accounting in general can have long hours in tax season. This causes your overall pay to actually be less when paid a salary. Be sure to figure that into your pay negotiations.
