Pros

- High bonus payout - with the right manager, potential for opportunity - usual benefits of a big company (access to world class capital, equipment and tools) - in general, the average engineer is competent and a team player

Cons

- job instability (you are just an easily replaceable number). Large numbers of people get walked out with little notice and rolling layoffs are common all the while the company makes incredible profits and the CEO gets millions more in bonuses. - if you are an immigrant, don't expect a fair/timely GC sponsorship - HR is not trustworthy, helpful or capable of looking beyond a generic job description - usual large company drawbacks (politics, lethargy, bureaucracy and never ending self defeating processes and procedures) - too many managers, not enough engineers - no simple / basic perks (have to pay for your own coffee), no family events, Christmas parties etc. - Peoria is a less than ideal location (sad that there are "no-go" areas in such a small town) - limited (at least very slow) technical career path. Many more management opportunities

Pros

Good brand name. Known to be the best in the heavy equipment industry, although heavy equipment industry has not had any breakthroughs for decades.

Cons

promotions are not merit based. Accountability is just a word, not something that is followed. Even if the manager made a bad decision they are not held responsible but rather promoted! Very discouraging to see that at the workplace. Many of the managers are not willing to listen to the flaws of the company that cause the current problems but continue to ignore the problems. Depending on which part of Caterpillar you are working in, you will get more opportunities than others. The Culture fosters all of the wrong behavior and leads to more problems.
