Pros

Being a very busy and often filled-to-capacity hospital, you can learn a lot about your chosen field in health care. Time and workload moves fast in busy areas like the ER and ICU.

Cons

Insane workload for Techs at times in the ER and other departments. It is virtually impossible to be proactive in your job. It's constant damage control mode. If you're not an RN, there is virtually no career advancement. Paramedics and EMT's are not recognized as anything but glorified techs, and without acknowledgment of nationally licensed scope of practice that could be used to better the efficiency and customer wait times. Patient Care and ER Techs, although absolutely essential to the patient care process, are not fairly compensated for the ever-expanding list of job duties they have to assimilate to. This is very closely related to the incomplete and outdated job description that HCA has for these positions. It would seem almost intentional that the job description is vague and not updated, in order to keep the salaries low for the Techs, and maintain the impression that these valuable employees are easily replaceable and not essential to the patient care process.

Pros

Nice people - for the most part, the people that I worked with were kind and helped out. Helping others - in this job you get to help people who are sick or in the hospital for some reason. It is very satisfying at the end of the day when you do something like this.

Cons

Poorly compensated - I did not get paid much but it was a summer job so I didn't really expect much. Other employees complained of their pay though. Also, there is somewhat of a caste system in hospitals. Doctors treat nurses crappy, nurses treat their secretaries crappy, and the secretaries treat the patient escorts crappy.
