Disorganized and potentially toxic -- proceed with caution

Pros

Casual work culture, potentially interesting projects,

Cons

There seems to be a bit of a divide between scientists and engineers. As an engineer, I often felt like more of a tool at the disposal of scientists rather than an employee with thoughts and feelings to voice. On more than one occasion, I was assigned to a project for which I lacked the appropriate skills, even after voicing my concerns. Generally, I am very willing to learn new skills to accomplish tasks, but considering the amount of time I was given and the scope of the projects, I felt like I was set up for failure. Projects are often poorly planned, too ambitious, and lack direction. As a result, I was often expected to work extra hours at the ends of projects to try and compensate for the poor planning at the beginning. Project leads often failed to communicate all the details of projects to me, leaving me with a fragmented view of the end goal. People often work and send emails over the weekend, setting the expectation that I do the same. When I gave my two weeks notice, I was met with passive aggressiveness and felt largely ignored and even a bit antagonized as I tried to finish up my remaining work.

Pros

- Some extremely smart and hard-working people will very much inspire you to learn a lot! - Managers care a lot about your success and will go the extra mile to put you in a position to grow your career and pick up valuable skills! - You are encouraged to learn new science and engineering skills and topics! Senior scientists and engineers will often inquire about what you are interested in point you to relevant resources as well. - Relaxed environment with flexible schedule. Office culture emphasizes getting deliverables done, not clocking in meaningless hours!

Cons

- Some people in the past have been assigned to teams whose work-area and expertise do not align with the assignee's interests, which has resulted in de-motivated employees. - Most senior staff come from technical backgrounds, and while they have excellent technical skills, not all are great managers. If your manager is not giving you adequate support, you will need to be highly self-motivated to stay productive. - Annual cycle of proposal writing to maintain business revenue can be taxing for those who aren't used to the proposal process and diverts a lot of valuable scientists and engineers from performing actual software development.

Pros

The employees at Charles River Analytics come from impressive backgrounds and prior experiences. Everyone is also incredibly nice, making it easy to learn from others and grow in your own career. Further, the company is growing quickly, which not only is exciting, but creates even more professional development opportunities. In addition to the great people, the culture is very relaxed - most people wear jeans - and there is a nice range of perks like education assistance, snacks throughout the office, flexible schedules, shared equity and free parking in Cambridge!

Cons

With growth comes more work and more responsibility, but that also leads to great learning experiences. The team is very supportive and eager to help one another as well, which makes dealing with busier times even easier.
