Pros

The junior staff you work with are nice, the main HQ is aesthetically pleasing, and you get free snacks. There's also a ton of learning opportunities to make you better at your job.

Cons

The hiring model for junior staff is largely based on hiring directly out of undergrad. That's a perfectly reasonable model, but it leads to a management culture of Principals being far too hands-on to the point of it being bothersome and inefficient. This also applies to those who were hired with an advanced degree which doesn't make any sense because that group doesn't need that degree of management. It's borderline insulting that I have to check with a manager for almost every change I make. Thus, there's no ownership at the junior level. The overall culture is heavily focused on the office where it's seen as a good thing if you're in the office until 10PM the entire week. It's fine for single people just out of school, but for those with families and other responsibilities, this is NOT sustainable. I've heard from practice leads that "this is just how consulting is." The fact that CRA isn't interested in changing that means they aren't willing to disrupt the model and aren't that innovative as they claim.

Pros

Good pay, some nice teammates

Cons

If you are looking for a place that hires from ivy plus schools simply because they want “smart” people this is the place for you. The diversity is lacking and they care more about where you are coming from rather than your experiences. The structure of growth in this company is pretty much if you have a senior person on your side you will get projects and attention. Otherwise good luck on getting noticed. The quality of work is much lower than other consulting firm and many deliverables are finalized based on vibes.

Pros

-Benefits -Good team for the most part

Cons

Where to start... - Low pay compared to other Bay Area competitors/industries - CEO wants everyone to eventually return to office. Huge pain if you're a fan of WFH or have to commute everyday. - Out of date systems. Many components of the current infrastructure is broken or not up to date and since my team was short-handed or busy all the time , there was less time dedicated to get these funding or upgrading so systems - Some of the VPs think they're better than everyone else. Feeling disrespected by people that think they "know it all"

Charles River Associates Response

Thank you for your feedback, and I am sorry that your experience at CRA was not satisfying. I do want to address one specific comment, which is the return to office/work from home path which many companies are facing. We have been careful to prioritize the health and safety of our colleagues through the pandemic and have continued to work with individuals to ensure they feel supported whether they are working at home or in the office, based on their circumstances. That said, when the time is right, we plan to return to the office - - where we are absolutely better together. The physical interactions do make a positive difference - - in fostering innovation, collaboration, learning, and friendship. The rituals of office life—coffee breaks and the informal connections we make throughout the day matter, as does our office social life, which helps keep us engaged. I really believe it is our culture, the bonds that all of our colleagues have created, that has allowed CRA to prosper during these most difficult of times. It is hard to keep that going via the occasional video chat and even harder to convey to our newer colleagues. -- Jen Kordell, CHRO
