My time at Chemonics was a complex experience marked by exceptional colleagues and deeply disappointing leadership practices, particularly in the region where I was based. On the positive side, I worked alongside incredibly dedicated, skilled, and mission-driven associates and managers. The talent at the operational level is the company’s strongest asset. Unfortunately, that’s where most of the value—and burden—resides. Management structures in my division were weak and often lacked competence and accountability. Leadership decisions were made with little transparency, and strategic planning felt reactive rather than forward-thinking. During critical periods, such as the anticipated stop-work order, we were assured that the company was well-positioned to weather the storm. However, approximately 80% of the company was furloughed within a week, and many were laid off shortly after. It became clear that the company prioritized protecting overhead and legal standing over staff well-being and preparedness. There was also a disturbing level of inequity in how employees were treated. I witnessed microaggressions toward Black and Brown staff and experienced a culture where gender bias and cultural appropriation were left unaddressed, particularly by confident senior leaders. Efforts to elevate diverse voices or recognize lived experience were often sidelined or tokenized. Junior and mid-level staff faced relentless workloads, and work-life balance was non-existent. Despite branding itself as a large, global corporation, Chemonics frequently operates with the rigidity and compensation structure of a nonprofit, offering little in the way of upward mobility or organizational support. Senior leaders were largely insulated from these issues, which created a significant divide between leadership and the rest of the team. While Chemonics claims to center equity and global collaboration, my experience revealed a disconnect between those values and their internal operations. I hope the company takes more serious steps toward aligning its internal culture with its public commitments. Unless significant changes are made at the management and structural levels, I would advise entry—and mid-level professionals to proceed with caution.

- The company sometimes uses the culture of being able to be involved in all aspects of business and professional development to squeeze employees for all they are worth. Pay is ok, but workload expectations are unlike any other company I have worked at. - Can be clicky, including at senior levels where some SVPs pick favorites and keep promoting them favoring loud posturing over quiet efficiency. - Pay and benefits are very average and nothing to write home about, particularly the retirement through the ESOP, which feels like a bit of a trick as most employees will likely not see these funds.
