Pros

Travel and easy to make friends with co-workers

Cons

Initially, I thought my experience at Chemonics was great, but looking back I realize I was young and didn't know better. You'll make friends with others like you, which was nice -other Type-A professionals eager to change the world. But, the company workaholic culture is not healthy. Everyone hears about it going in, however if you're young, you might not realize you're getting pulled into it. It was only after leaving and gaining other experience that I realize how abused I was. At the end of the day you're a glorified admin assistant filling out paperwork for the government. That list of paperwork never gets shorter. The work culture encourages you to stay late. Work until 7 or 8 at night was common. My worst nights had me working until 1 and 2 am only to wake up and go back in for 9. The salaries are too low for this.

Pros

There are no reasons to work at Chemonics

Cons

The PSM project in Arlington is extremely volatile. This is a ladder climbing organization with top leadership who only have their own best interests in mind. Toxic environment. Issues with USAID are ongoing and they were put under watchdog initiative by congress last year due to their lack of understanding of global supply chains. Expectations to devote your entire outside life to the company with little reward or recognition. As someone who has stayed at other organizations long term I couldn't dedicate more than a year at this place. This is the worst employment experience you could have.

Pros

Well known company in the international development field.

Cons

Low pay compared to competitors. Very rarely will they bring anyone in at the Manager level who has not been an associate, and they often low-ball associates who have more experience (e.g., they will pay and treat a recent college grad the same as someone with a Masters and 2-3 years of experience) and then expect you to stay in your associate position at a low pay grade for 2-3 years before getting promoted. Horrible managers who don't care about pushing all of their work down on lower level staff. My advice: avoid this company all together. They churn out associates at such a high rate and could care less about it. They only start investing in you as an employee when you stick out the stress for 4-5 years. Heed the advice of other lower ratings and look somewhere else.
