Good Place to Start

Pros

Great pay and benefits. One of the few companies that still have a pension. It's 15% of your salary. You have to stay 3 years to be vested though. Great place to start if you're a grad wanting to get some experience or trying to break into the industry from a different one. Do your 2-3 years then move on to another company where you can have a bigger impact and pay. They have a strong safety culture.

Cons

The ability to impact change is non-existent unless you are one of the few key employees the leaders will listen to. They spout the desire for employees to bring forth ideas for change and improvements and even have programs in place to do so, but when you do, you get labeled as difficult and it will stall your career. Best to just keep your head down, do your work, and keep quiet. The openness of the business for flexible work is extremely limited. They decreased the ability for corporate staff functions at the sites to work from home from 2 to now only 1 day a week every other Friday. You do have the option to work a 9/80 or 4/10 schedule but expect them to be watching the clock to ensure you are physically in the office that entire time. If you're a single parent or have primary care obligations to your children, don't expect much flexibility in your work. The corporate culture is not one of trust and empowerment. There are many layers of approval to go through to get the simplest of things done. I've never worked for a company of this size and seen senior leaders have no ability to make decisions for their function without additional approvals. It really handicaps leaders. Many processes are not documented so it can be incredibly challenging. Most policies and processes are on SharePoint sites, but these are not updated regularly so it's highly likely you will find outdated policies and procedures on these sites when looking up things. It can take months to hire an employee due to the many layers of approval that are required to hire a candidate. DE&I is solely focused on visible diversity. There's no true desire for diversification of thought, backgrounds, experiences, etc.

Pros

Chevron Phillips offers a good work-life balance.

Cons

For all of the diversity initiatives that the company claims to have, the upper-management at Chevron-Phillips does not value diversity of THOUGHT whatsoever. Value is placed on “visible diversity” only. Upper-management bullies mid-level management and below on a routine basis—overtly and covertly. If you push back on anything, you will be placed in time-out and will most definitely experience a career stall. Employees are often left wondering what they did wrong in pushing back/speaking up, because the company spews “trust” initiatives. I believe that employees start to feel safe in speaking up, only to then realize it’s all lip-service. I have seen it happen so many times and it has created a completely toxic culture . Upper-management all believe that they are the smartest people in the room and, therefore, you better go-with-the-flow or face consequences. Promotions are based on politics, not on competency nor results. Furthermore, in most areas, there is no value placed on anyone who does not hold a chemical engineering degree, which creates a culture of absolutes and unilateral thinking. It’s not a good long-term strategy for a business.

How Long Can You Stomach The Kool-Aid

Pros

Woke corporate culture that acts like they care by choice until they don’t. Nice salary though

Cons

An HR run company that is exceptionally two faced. Everyone pretends that CpChem has an elite corporate culture that embodies diversity and inclusion and their employees matter but it is very much a facade. HR heavily polices their employees creating significant work distraction and toxicity. Icare initiatives are a form of corporate control with the guise they create a wonderful corporate culture. Company uses observed drug testing as a form of intimidation. Managers trigger investigations and witch hunts into their employees in cases where there are disagreements between employee and supervisor. There were instances where leadership would not allow sales reps to be forthright with customers. Management filled other leadership positions based on religious affiliation. Leadership is self serving and a bunch of box checkers. Drink your kool aid with a smile and nothing else.
