Pros

If you want to start out as either a Kindergarten teacher or a High School teacher at the same pay, this is the place. If you have a good Principal and you are well liked, your experience can be good. If you want to work with underprivileged kids, this is the place.

Cons

High burnout- most people forget that you have to handle difficult parents and kids. Lots of these kids shouldn't be in the grades they are in. A separation between the administration and the teachers. Its like two different companies. Communication sucks- a lot of communication seems to be gossip. Teachers are not given enough money- I've seen the "regular" kids not have books to take home- and this is a from a TOP performing school. If you are not "one of them" (meaning some people are lifers there)- you may or may not get accepted.

Pros

Good pay and benefits. Students are better than general public think. If properly supported, counselors can have a great impact on students' performance.

Cons

Too much red tape. It is nearly impossible to make changes or to add new programs. Every school has its own culture. A few are better than others. Some schools value counselors but many don't. Union doesn't support the newcomers well at all. Most teachers don't have a clue what counselors do and often make impossible demands. Caseload of 400+ are very common.

Pros

Some students make the job more than satisfying. In high school, there are opportunities to make additional money after school or during the summers.

Cons

Promotion depends upon who you know - you have to be a member of the "good ole boy" network. Rules have been applied inconsistently when it comes to qualifications for certain positions.
