Pros

The best thing about working for Cisco might just be that you if you are a competent and productive engineer, you have quite a bit of flexibility in defining your role and your contribution level. If you are really gunning for promotions, look for a good group, find a niche, take on roles that are difficult or un-wanted, and work your rear end off. If you want to coast and balance your time between work and other interests, then find a steady group, manage your time well, and you can stay safe in your job with just about 40 hours of work a week... and you might have the flexibility to telecommute or work from home.

Cons

There is one other danger I must mention. This applies even in 'good' groups. There is a tendency at Cisco to just keep loading you with more and more responsibilities until you actually stand up and say enough. If this is an interesting job, you might find that you are spending more time on work than you had originally planned, at the expense of family, friends, etc. So decide for yourself how much you want to work and what your goals are. And then be prepared to work with your management to define the appropriate role. No one will come and ask you what you want at Cisco. You have to decide that for yourself, and then communicate it to your management. Also, if you do end up in a bad situation, be prepared to make an honest assessment of the situation and leave. No one likes to quit, but if you end up staying 5 or 6 years without fair rewards, you will find yourself falling well behind people who were your peers when you started... and this is really not a good experience.”

Pros

regular paycheck, industry standard. Will not go away tomorrow. The company is the network hardware standard. When anyone is putting in network infrastructure, anything that will connect to the internet, it will go through a Cisco Systems product at one point or another. That means they company will last a few years, so there will be consistent employment. If you work hard enough to convince your boss you are worthy, and you get a mediocre or better review on your yearly talent review? you will get paid every other week. This does not mean you are delivering quality work or innovation, but you are playing the game well. it is sad. there is so much opportunity here.

Cons

innovation is out the window. it is becoming process laden, and totally red tape encumbered. Layoffs every time they need to make numbers. Management heavy. You want 100 words or more. Hmm. Why? This is exactly the problem we are having at Cisco. You set a rigid guideline, which requires people to fill up space, even when it does not have meaning? We are experiencing the same here. Why host a 1 hour meeting, when the point could be conveyed in 15 minutes. Cisco used to be a highly innovative company, delivering cutting edge products. Now? we struggle to get 100 words, instead of focusing on the product.

Horrible and Toxic Management Chain

Pros

There are no real perks here — not in career growth, not in leadership, not in work culture. If you want to damage your mental health, hurt your career, and waste years of your potential, then by all means, join this company. Otherwise, stay far away.

Cons

If I could give this company a rating of -20, I would.Cisco used to be a great place to work about four years ago. It was full of talented, motivated, and genuinely smart people who made the company what it was. But those people are gone. Over the past few years, almost every capable and talented employee has left for better opportunities — and what remains is a mix of toxic, incompetent management and a completely broken culture. The management chain is horrible and toxic from top to bottom. HR is useless — they exist only to protect management and maintain power, not to support employees or ensure fairness. Performance, hard work, and results mean absolutely nothing here. The only thing that matters is internal politics and toxic relationships among certain managers. Even after laying off people twice a year, Cisco still keeps unqualified and unprofessional managers who don’t even understand the basics of their own jobs. They make constant mistakes, cause financial losses, and face zero accountability. Meanwhile, employees who work hard, bring measurable results, and actually care about their projects are ignored, mistreated, and eventually forced to leave due to burnout and stress. If you’re looking for growth, mentorship, or a place where your talent will be recognized — this is not it. Cisco will not help you grow; it will drain you mentally and emotionally until you decide to leave. What’s left is a stagnant environment run by toxic managers who protect each other no matter how much damage they cause. Do yourself a favor — don’t join this company. A company that doesn’t value its people, its true talent, or the employees who built its success is already in decline. And Cisco’s culture today reflects exactly that.
