Pros

- Every day is different...on purpose...if the projects are not different each day then we aren't building. - The teams that we have come from all areas of the country, all backgrounds, and all seem to find a rhythm that creates some incredible projects. - We are a relatively flat organization where Engineers, Superintendents, and Project Managers have frequent and personal interactions with the leadership of the company.

Cons

- At times, everyone must roll their sleeves up and get down in the details of complicated problem sets. - Not everything goes according to plan and that can set a project team back for months at a time. - Tough jobs typically come from tough clients.

Pros

There are a lot of intelligent managers and executives within Clark who can offer you advice on your career and personal life. Many of whom are from the DMV area so have a good perspective of how to adjust to the area and make it a good place for you to live. Good benefits for an entry level job and depending on your executive, could have some nice incentives including bonuses for safety related successes as well as for overall project success. Clark offers a program for new hires to get involved with others in the same position to view project, volunteer around DC, and have social outings to get to know the area.

Cons

A lack of transparency with how promotions are awarded. Feels as if many promotions are given based off of nepotism and company image and less of merit based promotions. You have no say in your first project as a new hire so if you are put into a bad position, you feel like you are digging your way out of a hole to catch your coworkers. Upper management is hit and miss at times when it comes to going to bat for you. Whether it be that they are more involved in other projects and don’t have the time to talk to you or they generally could care less about how you’re doing in the company and more about the bottom line. As it pertains to the different business groups at Clark, there needs to be more fluidity between groups. Clark assigns you to certain business groups not solely based on your interest but also your ability to get to work. For example, if you tell Clark you have a vehicle as opposed to those who don’t, you will be out on projects that can be very far from the DC area and will require you to drive. That was never disclosed but it is self evident since being here, with no stipend offered to those who drive over an hour to work everyday. You may ask why you live so far from your project you may ask, to which Clark purposely doesn’t tell you where you will be working until 2 weeks prior to orientation because they want you to live where you want to live and don’t want to dictate that based off of your project location. That remains true even if you are living in Virginia and have to commute to Baltimore.

Clark Construction Group Response

Thank you for your thorough review of your Clark experience. Recognizing the role job placement has on significant life decisions, we are re-evaluating our communication process for new hire job assignments (and current employee reassignments) and have a plan to be more transparent and communicative. Regarding the promotion process and the disconnect between HR and leadership, I encourage you to reach out to me directly to discuss. I want to get more details on that so that we can improve. - Brian Flegel, SVP, Talent

Pros

You understand the construction business very quickly and are asked to contribute right from the start. Very lean organization so everyone is important.

Cons

Culture is a bit old (ties are mandatory in the office) plus there is not much training / development for those outside the real of engineer.
