Working at classical is truly a mixed bag -- that's the best way I can put it.

Pros

- compensation -pay for graduate school -scholars are amazing and will brighten everyday - if you're inexperienced, you will grow so much as a teacher within 1 year - if you reach out, you will typically get a lot of support -can move up rather quickly

Cons

- not every coach and GTL are the same so those relationships and interactions with adminstration can make or break your experience. I personally had an amazing GTL who was very empathetic and compassionate so my time has been much better than some people I know because of that. - it is A LOT of work outside of school when you first start until you learn how to do things more efficiently so I highly recommend making sure your commute isn't that far -if you teach in a testing grade you are *required* to do tutoring for 3 months of the school year, you do get paid a nice hourly rate, however, it is extra time added on to an already long day and doesn't leave much time for self-care or work-life balance.. Especially, if you're still attending Relay. -very minimal teacher autonomy -get observed twice a week (personally, that didn't bother me but I know for some people it is a little much) -teacher retention rate isn't very high

Pros

Students get high scores on state tests. Students are pushed to achieve. School is safe and consistent. There is constant professional development. With the Classicorps fellowship they pay for grad school as well. They want you to remain in the network so will find ways for you to advance.

Cons

Intense teaching environment for teachers and students. Very strict on students and teachers. Work expectations extend well beyond the classroom. Expect to be up late working most nights your first year. Negative work environment because of constant stress. Stress on students is unreasonable. There is no recess. Children can't ask questions or move in their seat during lessons.
