Pros

Overall a good company to work for, have been with them for over ten years, provide flexibility when needed (but this is down to the manager, I have been lucky with most of the managers I have had). Many opportunities with the business, such as working at festivals, one of the best experiences whilst working for the Co-op. Have also completed a degree apprenticeship with them, which I was very grateful for the opportunity. Opportunity to train up in store (again dependent on your manager and management team). Good discount on own brand goods. I do like the values that Co-op have, but unsure if they're truly stuck to, but I do believe they are possibly one of the "better" businesses and do try to do good.

Cons

Progression is more difficult since they have got rid of deputy managers, however pay as one wasn't great and sometimes team leaders were on more than team managers, even now the pay isn't amazing for what they ask of a team leader to fill in that gap that is now missing from not having deputy managers. A lot of cuts in store, particularly hours, however I guess that's the way of retail at the minute. Have recently found it hard to transfer within the business, many stores not even getting back to me which is really disappointing especially having dealt with transfers in previous stores and always trying to help accommodate or put transfers in touch with other nearby stores. Some stores can be very cliquey, and progression into head office is pretty much impossible, they go on more of who knows who, even if you are encouraged to apply for roles, which is disappointing. Very clear disparity between head office and stores unfortunately.

Pros

- Good management - Opportunities to further career - Rota well ahead of time

Cons

Morale of staff extremely low Management think they're running the government, take it far too seriously and expect too much from minimum wage employees. Expected to never stand still/chat Different rules for different members of staff No overtime

Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s great to hear you felt supported by good management and that you had opportunities to grow your career. We also know how having a planned rota in advance makes a big difference. We’re sorry to hear that you felt that morale was low and that expectations didn’t always feel fair or consistent. We want colleagues to feel respected and valued, and that includes having clear, consistent standards across the team. We’ll share this feedback with the local leadership team to help them reflect on how their approach is landing day to day. We hope that you shared your concerns at the time, however if you feel that there are unresolved issues, you can share them confidentially via our former colleague contact form at colleagues.coop.co.uk/contacts.
