Pros

Inside sales provides a much faster commission and learning about the CRE industry from very knowledgable co-workers and managers.

Cons

Outside sales commission structure is much more difficult to get a grasp on with usage and annuities.

Thanks for providing your thoughts on CoStar Group. It’s great to hear that you were able to benefit from Inside Sales – the commission structure fits well with the products sold and helps more novice salespeople gain expertise in selling for CoStar Group. As a company with a sales force that has grown significantly in the last year, we have to reexamine our structures regularly to make sure they remain relevant to the sales force and products we are selling. Effective March 1 a new structure and commission plan for Field (or Outside) Sales to be compensated fairly for their new sales and maintenance of existing accounts. With so much growth, management reviews the compensation plan on a yearly basis, and as we’re sure things will be different by this time next year, we will continue to evolve compensation and incentives to fit with the company as it grows.

Pros

Great product in Tier 1 Markets however it still needs major improvement in less developed markets. The growth at the company is exciting and there is always a changing company culture.

Cons

Really low base salary considering the amount of responsibility and new business representatives should not be punished with withheld commission due to lack of full usage each month despite CoStar still collecting revenue from the client. I feel that full commissions should be paid out on sales not a fraction of your commission based on the usage.

Thank you for your feedback. You’re right that there is room for improvement in some of the smaller markets, but as we focus first on meeting the needs of the more concentrated areas of the country, the improvements work their way out beyond major cities and into areas that still hold a lot of potential for CoStar Group. Upper management regularly looks at feedback regarding compensation, and on a yearly basis makes changes to better incentivize the Sales department and show greater results for all those involved. Since your review, management has announced a new compensation plan for 2015, based on both the information we have received over the past year as well as the needs of a much larger Sales force than there was at the start of 2014. Best of luck to you this year, and we hope you’re able to excel throughout 2015 with the new sales opportunities!

Miserable

Pros

Great thing about the company is that there are a lot of recent graduates so there are always people willing to go to happy hour. Stocked fridge with snacks and drinks are a great plus and the holiday party is great. You do get a good introduction into commercial real estate and other companies do like to see that on a resume.

Cons

So I worked at CoStar until spring of 2014 and I have to say the experience was miserable for me. The 2 minute call minimum was ridiculous and stressed most of my coworkers out. It felt like every conversation you had you needed to stretch so you can meet that quota. You call on people that do not want to have anything to do with CoStar and some that bed for you to stop calling you. When you ask your manager what to do about that property they ask you to wait a month and just follow back up with them. I spoke to a lot of people who literally begged to be taken off our list, but I had to call either way. Most people wanted to confirm by email but management wanted us to call because that's where relationships are formed and I would agree but when people hate the company and do not want to talk with us at all I think you should take what you can get. As someone on here stated WAAAYYYY earlier, it is not the morning of that is the worst part its Sunday night when you know it starts all over.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and I’m sorry to hear you did not have a positive experience at CoStar Group. There have been a lot of changes in the past year, and I think you may have been able to enjoy some of the improvements made to ensuring that quality is the focus of our research. At the end of the day, it’s not how many two-minute phone calls a researcher is able to make, but how a researcher is able to develop better relationships with their contacts. Among other changes, email interactions with contacts are now more easily documented in the system to better show contact with clients who prefer emails. Feedback like yours has been able to jumpstart similar changes, and we appreciate the feedback. Best of luck to you in your current position!
