Pros

Good benefits 12 hour shifts Good pay

Cons

Staff is short so it's hard to use vacation time after building up hundreds of hours. The nature of the job is stressful.

Pros

Cobb County offers reasonably good healthcare benefits, though you will need to fork out an additional $50 each two week pay period for a spouse if they have a job that offers healthcare but turns it down. The county keeps most equipment up to date, and I have seen other departments' equipment that seem third world compared to what we have.

Cons

Cobb County Government seems to try to find ways to skirt around the issue of paying employees what they deserve. I'm not complaining about myself, I just see how they treat others who deserve much more. Holding off promotions for years and placing sergeants in the roles of lieutenants without compensating them, implementing pay studies only to hold off on increasing salaries, creating absurd goals for firefighters to obtain an exceeds rating for raises after no raises were given for seven years, while office jobs have much easier standards for obtaining an exceeds rating on their evaluation, and allowing an 8 year firefighter and a rookie to have a difference in salary of only two thousand dollars, are a few ways that Cobb County fails to compensate employees fairly. Also, the county shows no appreciation for their firefighters. In one instance a firefighter with a newborn with cancer was denied annual leave donation from other firefighters, though it would cost the county nothing. After years of employment I have seen how little they appreciate those who work for so little, and take on so much liability day in and day out; not to mention the lives and bodies we put on the line each shift. Cobb County keeps firefighters on the job when they have proven to be unsafe in fires or on the engine. Firing practices seem to be arbitrary, and while some are kept on after multiple DUI's and domestic charges, others may have only a single, minor offense are let go immediately. Grant it, I may not have all the evidence, but it often seems that way.
