Great Company with a Great Future

Pros

Each office has their own individual quirks and culture which makes the working environment warm and welcoming. The hierarchy is very flat which nice and perhaps unusual for a company this size. What really makes a good company are the people and the company culture - not what you are paid. If you're in it for the money, this is the wrong company for you. New ideas are welcomed with open arms in this company, managers are supportive of their employees in their careers, and continuing education is highly valued.

Cons

Nothing in particular. It will be interesting to see where the new leadership will take us in the next 6 months.

Thanks for the comments. Regarding pay, we are continually benchmarked by the industry as we recruit people from the marketplace. We have to be competitive to survive. One of the biggest factors to consider when comparing engineering firms is whether overtime is paid or not. This has a huge impact on employees’ take-home pay, the Company’s business model, and on morale . At Coffman Engineers we compensate people for each hour worked. We think this is the right thing to do for people, so please take it into consideration when comparing salary. As far as females in upper management, this is very important to us and a continual work in progress. As an affirmative action employer, we are committed to maintain a diverse employee population throughout the company, including women. We want and need diverse perspectives influencing our company in order to continue to grow a healthy, sustainable business. We are excited to have recently added our first female director to help guide us at the board level. Some of our engineering departments are managed by women, as well as our corporate HR . We have a deep bench of upcoming talent which will afford us the opportunity to increase the number of women in the upper levels of management. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

My employment experience at Coffman Engineers in Spokane has been exceptional. They take pride in having a great culture, and it sounds cliche to say until you're in that environment and can enjoy being at work and appreciate the people you work with. Coffman Engineers also provides resources for their employees to stay current on new software products, technologies, code revisions, etc. This includes all aspects of the business including engineers, designers and drafters, IT, and accountants. Coffman Engineers gives their employees opportunities to take on additional responsibilities in project management, which include taking lead on multi-discipline projects since Coffman Engineers has many engineering branches under one roof. In my experience, everyone has been very approachable, from engineers and drafters in my department to those in other departments, to project managers and principals, to even corporate employees and all levels up the management chain, including the CEO and CFO. We all depend on each other to create an enjoyable and successful workplace. It has been, and will continue to be, a great place to work, learn, grow, and experience innovative ideas.

Cons

The main con I have experienced is the medical coverage has a deductible up to some amount, so doctors visits beyond preventative care requires payment by the employee. With that being said, a deductible on medical coverage may very well be the norm these days, and Coffman Engineers contributes to an HSA account on behalf of the employee to offset some of these costs. This is a minor inconvenience, and if you budget for it, the benefits of working at Coffman Engineers far outweigh the inconvenience of these medical costs.

Your comments about your experience are very encouraging. We talk about open door policy, we think that we have an open door policy, but unless it is actually experienced by our team it only exists in theory. So we will continue to practice our open door policy. This policy assures that we have access to all of the best ideas in the company and that concerns are properly addressed. As far as the medical costs associated with high deductible plans, we do recognize that this can be costly if not planned for. That is why Coffman contributes nearly half of the deductible in each employee's Health Savings Account. So as you suggest, if you budget for (or contribute the balance of the deductible) to your HSA, you will be in great shape. Health care costs continue to rise for everyone, so we will have to continue to be creative in order to mitigate these costs. - Dave Ruff, President

Pros

Great work environment, great people. Plenty of opportunities for personal growth. Company is always on the look out for new markets and committed to finding great people. Opportunities to travel to other offices for larger projects and training.

Cons

Huge variety in work, difficult for some to switch between projects, I see the diversity on work as a huge perk!

Thanks for the comments. We do pride ourselves in the variety of work that we pursue. Earlier in my career at Coffman I went from designing a Snow Hauler for the South Pole Station, to designing a fish trap to catch endangered Bull Trout, to refurbishing a Carbon Anode Bake furnace. However, others in our company develop a depth of expertise with more focus (e.g. Laboratory Design, or Seismic Analysis, etc.). There are multiple paths inside of Coffman. I am glad you have landed where you can thrive. - Dave Ruff, President
