Pros

* It's easy to see the impact of your work on customers: software optimizations translate directly into lives impacted. * One of the most inspiring, thoughtful, caring, humble group of colleagues you'll find anywhere * For software engineers, Color is a rare opportunity to work closely with technical experts from other scientific disciplines. Even if you haven't taken biology since 9th grade, if you're somebody who enjoys science, you'll learn a ton from your colleagues.

Cons

* We're currently split between two offices (lab and HQ), making collaboration more challenging, but will be moving together in the next few weeks. * Lots of great product ideas, not enough time -- need to keep growing the team while preserving our culture. So far so good!

Pros

- The people. I love everyone who works here and have implicit trust in their excellence, enthusiasm, and communication. We work well together and enjoy spending time outside of work together, too. When external folks meet others from Color I always hear very positive feedback. I'm also really lucky and grateful for my relationship with my amazing manager. - The mission. I came to Color from a healthcare background, and it means so much to me to be a part of moving the entire field of genetics forward. I feel pride when I talk about Color privately and publicly, and everyone here is motivated by achieving our goals. - The work. We are always working on such exciting projects, on quick timelines (which suits me very well!), and across multiple specialties. I've learned so much that I would never have had exposure to in a traditional healthcare setting. I also get to talk to actual clients as part of my position, which is super rewarding and I find the internal teams at Color very highly value my input and feedback about their experiences. - The office. The location is great, as is my commute from the southern-ish part of SF. So easy by BART, which I take most days, or car if I need to. There are also abundant resources, including things like food and supplies as well as administrative support, which is different from previous positions I've held in traditional healthcare settings. I feel confident I have what I need to do my job effectively, and full freedom to speak up if I don't.

Cons

- I am not a fan of open office layouts, which is a matter of personal preference I think I would experience at any company or office with a similar layout. - We are busy! It's actually a pro, but it also necessitates prioritizing tasks when I'd much rather do the impossible and make everything happen all at once. This has been a hard lesson for me, though I certainly appreciate how often my input is sought and valued in making such prioritizing decisions. - Sometimes there are growing pains, like I don't feel like I get as much time with leadership as I once did, nor time to spend with new people. I also feel increasingly specialized, when I have really enjoyed having a generalist role so far. These are normal and expected, and I think we are still at a great size that allows for us to stay nimble and keeps the work exciting.
