Having reached my first anniversary milestone with ComPsych, this seemed the perfect time to share my thoughts and experiences on both the company and the department I lead, and provide some insight to those who may be considering joining our IT team.
Coming on-board with a new company in a senior leadership role can be a challenging proposition: you have to learn who the other players are, if there are office politics you need to navigate, where do you and your team fit in with the corporate vision and goals, and how do you get things done. Fortunately at ComPsych my transition was very quick thanks to a dynamic CEO who has built a strong leadership team, many with over 10 years’ experience with the company, and all who where were willing to spend time to get me up to speed. The company’s mission and goals are clearly defined and I’ve enjoyed working with the leadership team on joint accomplishments to move the company forward.
Similarly the IT team I lead with the help of my four directors is talented and accomplished. The department enjoys a close relationship with the business which results in meaningful projects that deliver innovative products and improve efficiencies. We’re not building software to sell, so we can focus all our efforts on developing systems specifically to support our business and our customers. And since ComPsych is in the business of helping people, it’s very rewarding knowing the systems we deliver are making a difference in peoples’ lives.
On one hand it’s hard for me to believe a year has already gone by, and then when I review the number of projects delivered by the IT team I’m impressed it’s only been a year, especially given that we strive to maintain a realistic work/life balance (something you’ll be hard-pressed to find in many IT organizations).
I’m very happy with my decision to join ComPsych and am excited about what the future holds as the IT department grows along with the company.
