Pros

Majority of employees are great people, with hearts and minds in the right place. Customer based company with great business plan to provide gas & electricity to wanting customers, how could you go wrong. Few areas of the company work in a traditional manner where employees are acknowledged for hard work and sometimes rewarded. Has potential to be great again. Proud to wear the colors... if you pay for them yourself

Cons

Since an explosion in Royal Oak, the gas side of the company took all the blame and the company made sure every employee shared in its shame. Firings came first, followed closely by mass retirements. Once the dust settled, the gas division was gutted, all the knowledge, experience and real leadership left. It was replaced with scared, intimidated, gutless cowards without gas utility experience, but knew how to take orders, say "YES", disseminate demands and report everything up. Entry level managers are hired off the street, college graduates, before hiring from within because experience from internal employees could expose other managers for their lack of experience & knowledge. 20 year employee, bachelors degree, letter of recommendations will be beat by outside the company 8-10 times. Any management positions available to internal employees are facilities manager, call center supervisors, meter reading supervisors etc... You have Field Leaders over our gas distribution employees who managed clothing stores, meter reader for 6 months, fast food assistant managers, facility superintendents (janitor) and real-estate agents, to name a few, field managing our potentially explosive emergent gas calls. And I'm talking 15 out of 26 in the metro area last 3-4 years. HR has been reduced to a 1-800 # who will only respond if it could be a potential lawsuit for the company. If you think this is just one employees opinion, look at those who are filling this out in last few years.... interns and PO'd employees.

Pros

What they lack in pay they make up for in vacation. Okay company if you are an engineer or executive manager, only. Really great workforce that do the day-to-day operations. Thank those that you see on the road or talk to on the phone because they are the only real reason your gas and lights are on.

Cons

Employee salary is less than 10% of co. total operation cost. Exrcutive compensation is very top heavy, see our annual report. Customer is #1 only when convient, see JD Power awards since 2000. Costly operating system implemented several years ago, SAP, is a complete failure. Consistanly reactive other than proactive with everything. An employees merit increse has been below the cost of living for the last 8 years. If you have any degree other than engineering you will find it very hard to move up in company. Glass ceilings everywhere.
