Pros

Had some interesting clients and enjoyed working with the public and a small handful of coworkers. Glad to get a pension

Cons

Everything else. This is for the probation department. Pay and benefits not good compared to other counties, retirement contribution too high, outdated systems, lack of consistency fairness and professionalism, some downright mean abusive and extremely apathetic and lazy uncaring coworkers, no innovation or passion for the work, employee input is neither asked for or valued, promotion process is a ridiculous joke, extreme lack of leadership, no work life balance whatsoever.

Pros

Job stability - after nine month probation period. Good place to get some experience and pay down debt before moving on. Each department can be very different, so take all the reviews here with a grain of salt. Some are good, some not. Very good people. They promote from within.

Cons

Low pay, expensive health insurance, and mandatory pay into pension at 1/4 of salary, which you'll never collect - because management wants high turnover. No EHR. All records are on paper, and all you do is write notes. Union is worthless and makes things worse.

Pros

There are a LOT of truly dedicated quality people at Public Works (funded by gas tax-NOT "my tax dollars") There are people that want and try to do the right thing in a ridiculously political bureaucracy (BOS) that benefits the "haves" - Think Danville, Alamo, Knightsen, Kensington. The people stay because they've been here too long and are invested emotionally and/or need the flexibility of 9/80 or 4/10 schedules.

Cons

Pay is the lowest in Northern California - El Dorado County pays the same and housing is 1/3 of what it is in Contra Costa. Raises are negated by take-aways - The pay-scale is flat for the last 7 years. No free coffee or bottled water (like in corporate) - health premiums are not affordable, something is askew with the Retirement Board - contributions have doubled in the last 8 years and when people cash out, the County money stays in the Retirement account, which is not part of the County, but a special district - they are FLUSH with assets. Advancement is for those socially connected - similar to corporate.
