The 2021 Reality of Convo!

Pros

At CONVO, the biggest pro is in direct relation to my peers - the video interpreters. They are what makes Convo culture strong and each and every one of us a unique asset to the company. There used to be a bigger list of pros for this organization, but unfortunately they are running it to the ground as of this year (2021) with an average rate of 2-3 interpreters leaving the company every 1-2 weeks.

Cons

-Poor upper management (horrible roll outs of new policy or company changes with little to no warning about what they are or when they will be implemented, managers seem to get jobs based on nepotism and not actual education in the field, not enough recognition or respect for VI's despite saying they do, the list goes on) -Interpreters never have a seat at the table to help with changes that direct effect them -Horrible compensation (no differentials during ques, veteran interpreters receiving raises of less that $1 after not receiving a raise in years, when raises are given it is because interpreters fought for them but the results are poor and do not keep up with market value / inflation) -Slow PTO accrual -High demand of Deaf callers, low (and continuing to lower) supply of interpreters -Fast burnout of interpreters due to consistent que and not enough call coverage

Pros

Consistent schedule. Awesome Interpreters. Great customers.

Cons

So many to mention. Convo claims to be a company that is Deaf centered and also that the interpreters are not just a number. However interpreters are constantly disregarded and gaslit when systemic problems within the company are addressed. Executive decisions are made which directly harm the interpreters that are the backbone of the company. The workload has increased and there are moments in which we are queuing and interpreters are not able to get their FCC mandated breaks, because we cannot transfer out. The company says that they are making strides in setting up VRS in other countries, and that records are being broken, and yet they have suspended raises, and interpreters have been working for years without getting a single raise or at most a 10 cent raise. This company does not care about its interpreters, and it is going to face a reckoning when talented people leave this company to go work for CONVO’s competitors. My advice, go to a different VRS company, because this is a sinking ship.

Pros

The team, the content/interpreting work, the benefits package, allows for work/life balance

Cons

It’s definitely hard work when you’re “on”, but that contributes to personal growth.
