Pros

It is a Job that pays, If you can get it

Cons

I was hired to work at Cook medical in early April 2018 as a Contract CAPA Engineer. The 1st day on the job I got an uneasy feeling from one of the Administrators of the company but I thought that was his personality. The next couple of days as I worked to understand Cooks Quality system. I notice small signals: people where going to meetings that I was not invited to, the director (my boss) of the CAPA section was interviewing people for a CAPA position after I was on the job for 2 days, the almost lethargic attitude people took to answering my question. Before the end of the second week on the job my recruiter called and told me that my boss did not want me to come back. I was not given a reason why and my recruiter asked me what happened. I could not for the life of me think what I did wrong. I did not argue with anyone, did not violate any of their policies (internet, security, or worktime). I guess they were shock to see an educated African American male with an Engineering degree. I was the only African American male at that company location that was not working in shipping or on the production Floor.

Pros

There is an old workplace culture. A lot of respect among peers. Company seems to do well to make employees comfortable through subsidized cafeteria and housing assistance although smoke screening sub-par compensation.

Cons

Sadly, the company is failing. They fought to keep the 'mom and pop' culture but as a result they missed the world class Med Device boat over and over and now it's too late. The EU-MDR and FDA gave them one chance and they are still fighting to stay on their remote island of a still perceived flat world. They fight to 'not' conform to GxP. Their understanding of regulatory requirements are fogged based on their own spun up interpretations. e.g. They have FEMAs but refuse to apply an RPN. Hence risk is based on their gut feel. LITERALLY. If I have to ever be hospitalized I'll demand that Cook sourced supplies not be used.

Pros

Family environment, good work-life balance, very forgiving and flexible.

Cons

It is very hard to get fired for low performance, and very hard to get promoted for high performance. Management is ossified into interconnected silos with very little incentive to collaborate or assist other groups. If you are a mover and a shaker, you will find it hard to effect change, because you will encounter resistance as soon as you need any help from a different department. Upper management (executive) is unaware of this or unwilling to make a change to break the gridlock. You will be labeled as a bad team player if you point this out. Upper management is full of people coasting into retirement, and that attitude flows down the ranks.
