Pros

Overtime pay, but mandatory overtime.

Cons

Overworked, and undervalued. I left due to running an entire floor on my own, and having inmates sent to me unannounced. When this occurred, several inmates got into a physical altercation and I did not get support/back up on ERT call for upwards of 5 minutes.

Pros

Learn exciting new phrases like, Empathy Fatigue. Delight the friends and family by randomly working "Prison Wallet" into boring dinner conversation. Feel like a better person by being an honorable/fair authority figure. Or you might discover what a disgusting sociopath you are! Godspeed C/O Pol Pot.

Cons

Constant Pressure to break institutional policies. Not just by the inmates, but even more so by, your fellow officers as well. Not recommended for persons ever described as "gullible" or "easily manipulated." This is not the place for you. Easy to accidentally bring some the "prison mindset" home with you. Clip-on ties. They really cheapen the entire profession as a whole.
